Default Firefox extensions and FF upgrade risks

What is a good method or policy for installing and uninstalling FF extensions, esp. when upgrading to a new major version of FF?

For example, can merely upgrading FF, while one has an extension, incompatible with the new major FF version, already installed, potentially damage the new major version of FF itself?

If so, how does one check out currently installed extensions in one's FF to see if there will be problems BEFORE upgrading?

I assume that in most cases, when there is incompatibility with extensions, that one just deletes/uninstalls the old extension and installed a new version of this extension, if available?

Perhaps somebody knows the URL of a FAQ on these issues ?
