[Dixonary] Round 3041, EPHOR
Folks,
The word for round 3041 is: ********************* EPHOR ********************* where capitalization has no significance. (In a previous email I suggested that it makes the word easier to read, but another player informed me that it doesn't. If upper-case letters don't float your boat, think of the word as ephor.) Please send invented definitions of EPHOR (or ephor) by private email to emallach at verizon dot net in the next 46+ hours, by 9 am US EST on Sat., Jan. 11. If you know what it means, please let me know ASAP the same way. If enough people know it I'll pick another - hopefully in time to keep the same deadline. Don't Reply to this message without changing its To field. That would send your message to the whole group. If I had paid attention to that in Round 3040, I probably wouldn't be dealing now. Don't suffer the same fate! According to timeanddate.com <http://timeanddate.com/>, the deadline is: and other times in other places. You might want to confirm any conversion that affects you. That site's good, but nobody's perfect. I expect votes to be due 48 hours later, 9 am Sunday in the eastern U.S.. New players are welcome. (So are old ones who've been quiet for a while. We still love you.) Just send me a definition that you invented without looking EPHOR up. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules>. And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming ... That was not intended to be a NAD. I hadn't noticed that the message to which I was replying was sent from the group! Normally replying does exactly what I want it to do. I should have read the fine print in Efrem's announcement of the word, but it was too small to read! Another def on its way soon, but I'm afraid it won't be as good as that one. Re: [Dixonary] Round 3041, EPHOR
Actually, it’s not quite that simple. While the reply-to is set by the group, your email itself shows as being “from” the group—see how you are quoted below with a simple reply.
This is something unique with your setup, and anybody else on the group (see how Tim’s email is quoted by you) and even if we type “Efrem” in our address line it is more likely to match this “wrong” address. We have to specifically type your email address and not your name to send the message. I don’t know what setting you have on this mailing list/account, but the problem is on your end, or ours or the group’s. Re: [Dixonary] Round 3041, EPHOR
As the Godfather of 'the Dixon' I have thought about this issue as much as
anybody, I think. I have plenty of experience. I once did it TWICE on the same word, and that's how it came to get its name. of course, that was in an earlier time, when the game was played in the TapCis forum on CompuServe. The mechanics were totally different, and email di not figure in. I see TWO key steps to helping us avoid too many submission errors: 1) Compose a brand new email to carry your def to the dealer. Don't use any kind of reply. Start fresh. 2) As a Dealer, put one clear line in your announcement message that contains nothing but the instruction on where to address the submission message. That's all I got. That's > the desired behavior for voting and for pretty much every other message, so it seemed reasonable > to make it the default. No, that's not true. Thunderbird always gives me three options: Reply, Reply All, and Reply to List. Reply is the default, and for messages sent to the group address by email, that replies to the sender. It's only when the message appears to have been sent directly from the group that Reply goes to the list. A Thunderbird user (it may be the same for other users, I don't know) can tell, because the From address shows up as something like 'Efrem G Mallach' via Dixonary <dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com> as in the message I'm currently replying to. I should have noticed, and normally I do. As far as I can remember you're the only one whose message appear like this. When voting, I have to remember to select Reply to List. RE: [Dixonary] Round 3041, EPHOR
I'm not sure how it happens, but I notice that the "ball" in Tim's message has his initials in it, TB. Johnny's has J, Dan's has DB, etc. Efrem's has TI. If the ball contains the initials, clicking it will bring forth the person's email address. Doing that with Efrem displays "The Intrepid Dixonists". Mine shows my picture and clicking the down arrow displays my contact email. I'm sure there's a method to that madness, it just isn't obvious at this point.

Yes, I think you're right.
