Default OT - Where Are the Snowdens of Yesteryear?

I originally posted this in the "Keeping In Touch" section, which seemed logical and, I thought, would keep the game sequence free of too many OT threads. However, after being around a little, I see that many, if not most, of the Dixonary players are accessing by email and don't often see the other sections of TapCIS. So, in an effort to launch a nostalgia-fest, here it is:

Wondering about many of the old (in terms of long-time, not being OLD) denizens of TapCIS forum. I hate to start mentioning names because, in my feeble-minded state, I will leave out many important folks.

Some who come to mind that I don't see in recent messages are Neil Rubenking and Theresa Carey, sort of the birth parents of Dixonary. The inimitable Fernando Gelbard (aka Ferdinand Sanz) came up in another thread. And whither Anders F. Sterner, the legendary "hiking-Viking?"

So, to kick off a round of "Oldies but Goodies," who is still here from the days when Howard Benner was still with us?

IIRC, Benner was still around when I first joined.

I checked the archives -- I first officially played in round 63 and
had a slow start ...

I joined in the days of Tapcis but can't recall if Howard Benner was
around in person or only be reputation. I lapsed for many years while
it was a yahoo site but Dodi persuaded me to return.

I mostly access Dixonary via the google groups site with email digest
for backup. I no longer frequent the Tapcis forum (or whatever it is
currently called).

Dodi maintains a list of current players which she updated this week.

Benner wasn't around when I joined back in '95 (in round 596, I'm told
by those who keep these records), and I don't think any of the others
you mention were, except for Theresa Carey, whose fortunes we followed
as she acquired her pilot's license and her daughters (two, IIRC)
progressed through school.

After the old TAP forum on CompuServe expired, I visited occasionally at
the website Judy Russell set up, but stopped when the interesting
conversations ceased a while back. I never used that site to play
Dixonary; I've played only by e-mail (with occasional peeks at our
GoogleGroups site when something seems to be missing from the e-mail
delivery).

Why go to a website when you can have stuff delivered right to your door?

Well, I came in on round 162, a little before you did (188), but well after
Howard Benner, who last played in round 82. I remember Neil Rubenking often
wrote humorous, disparaging comments about each def (including his own). And
Fernando would always have an excuse to avoid dealing when he won a round
(he finally did deal one round, IIRC).

Howard last played Round 82. Good info! I have read through some of the archives but looking for when specific people arrived or left the game feels too much like research. It's more fun to just ask.

I came in around #12 or #13 and I am pretty sure I played through the low 200's, around 210, or so.

You mention Rubenking and his humorous comments about each def. It was actually the custom for all or most voters to go through the defs and comment one-by-one on its plausibility, craziness, weird association etc. It was like sharing your vote- reasoning process, a form of thinking-out-loud. I think it was the intelligence and hilarity of the commenting that really drew me into the game. I am a little surprised that it disappeared.

Steve,

You're right, I goofed. I was looking at a J. Dixon who played a few rounds
between 188 and 220. Any relation? You came in on round 15. The last round I
have you playing is 763, but it was kind of sporadic after round 194.

I think J. Dixon was a woman. Although, I might be thinking that because I have a sister-in-law who is a J, and was married to a Jean, so that might be influencing my tendency to recall the name in a female connection.

The Dixonary J and I did the "Are you related," thing but found no connections.

Before marrying, I asked Jean if she was leery of becoming Jean Dixon (the astrologer was still popular back then). She said, "Nah." Her maiden name was McMahon and her dad was named Ed. She had seen all the funny reactions her whole life.

Her dad came to Atlanta once, on business, and Jean went down to meet him for lunch at his hotel. She went up to the desk and asked them to call Ed McMahon's room. After a pause the person asked for her name.

When she told them, "Jean Dixon," she said she thought for a few seconds they were going to have her escorted out.

I THINK (not sure) the astrologer's first name was spelled "Jeanne".

You are correct, she was Jeanne. But the hotel clerk couldn't hear the
difference.

Tapcis.com didn't have much action last time I visited there. It was
probably a couple of months ago, and at that point even Judy Russell
hadn't posted anything in a long time.

Anders was here briefly, but didn't stick around. I think he even tried
to get a few old timers back into the game.

I got into the game very late, during the waning days of the old-format
CompuServe forums. At the time I had never been interested in the game
and didn't even understand what it was. I was just immersing myself in
one of the last forums to exist in the old, TAPCIS-accessible format. I
had no idea how addictive this was going to be!

I actually met Howard Benner at a birthday party for Joan Friedman. Also
attended by one of those two men with the same last name - I think they
were brothers, but maybe not. Something Davis? Maybe Monte?

Monte Davis, yes! I am not remembering the other Davis, though. I remember
Joan Friedman for sure.

Another name that escapes me, a woman who came in and played the game I
think starting in the 50's or 60's. She played really well and gained ground
fast. A few months after she joined, I was dumbfounded to learn that she was
blind, and was playing this crazy game using a text reader. I can't imagine.

Does anybody remember who that was?

I think the other Davis was Crane. Monte is the one I met at Joan's
party. This was just before Joan was going to Illinois to study
accounting. She started to say something like "I am going to ..." and
before she said anything more Monte said "you're becoming a nun".
Everyone cracked up.

My time may have overlapped with that of Joan Friedman. She was the one
who was on /Jeopardy!

Yes, Joan was on Jeopardy. She was recently on another show, I think
Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me. She told me about it in advance, so I
listened. It's the one where there is a short quiz on recent events.
