Default [Dixonary] OT: How did you get here?

Howdy, Dixionarians!

I keep seeing in the running total that there's a lot of variance in how
long everyone has been here. If my information is correct, we're only a
couple years shy of the 30th anniversary of the game, and none of us have
been around since the very beginning.

So how did you get here? And why? And were you familiar with the idea of
the game (commercial versions and such) before you got here? And so on.

Default Re: [Dixonary] OT: How did you get here?

Great questions and curiosity! I'm one of the ... roughly 7 newest
players (?) but 'ive been here since my first game, 17 January 2011!
That was [Round 2174: EGGCORN] with Paul Keating dealahing. He
changed the word, (and corrected my n0ob's plural agreement goof) to
GANSEL - and i was off to these odd, wonderful races.

You asked How, not When. I LOVED (still love) Balderdash. And i
think we played Dictionary a few times in my kidhood days (i was 47ish
when i started here) ... i think maybe i did too well, as the youngest
kid of 4 and we stopped playing.

In the earliest 2010s - i had in mind a scheme VERY much like
Dixonary, (i had assumed that one dedicated volunteer would deal every
round) and so i searched the web for relevant info, and stumbled
(don't recall how) on these wonderful people! It has been a blast,
even though i just may be the player with the worst dealah goof of all
time: forgetting the real def in the list. (They were extremely kind
about it, and a few of us had a great laugh.)

How did you find us, Ryan?

I joined CompuServe back around 1992 and found myself spending time in the chat (CB Simulator) and gaming (Entertainment Center) areas where I befriended an absolutely wonderful lady named Froma Bessel (who went by the handle “Typo”).* She eventually introduced me to the “Fictionary” variant of the game (played in the MPGAMES forum) and let me know several of the players (Including Dave Cunningham and Toni Savage) were also playing in the TAPCIS forum.* Didn’t take me long to join both!

I do chat on Facebook with Theresa Carey who *was* around at the beginning… I could try to persuade her to make an appearance for a major anniversary. ☺

Default Re: [Dixonary] OT: How did you get here?

Wow, good question.

Somewhere in the early '90s, I joined CompuServe. I quickly became
involved in discussions on the Forums, and for various reasons (mostly
cost saving but also usability) I decided to use an "off-line reader"
program - TAPCIS. That brought me to the TAPCIS support forum (GO
TAPCIS) where, in one of its sections, a bunch of crazy people were
playing a word game that I had never heard of before (the commercial
versions of dixonary are totally unknown in the Netherlands).

I've been lurking in that section for a long time, but never dared to
participate myself. I figured that not being a native English speaker
would give me a too big disadvantage. That changed in round 1000 when
players invited everyone who had an interest to play and try "just
once". I did not become a regular player directly after that, but the
seed was planted and some time later I did officially join. (Now, many
years later, I am absolutely not a regular player anymore, but I still
follow along and I'll occasionally play a round when I have time)

Interesting fact: When I started participating, I was given special
permission to deal from a Dutch dictionary, so my first few (I think 3)
rounds as a dealer are the only words in the history of this game that
are not in any official or unofficial English dictionary.

Cheers,
Hugo

I don't remember exactly, but I think I joined the game at a time when
CompuServe was making some kind of change to its service, or, possibly
discontinuing it altogether. I decide to grab onto whatever might
endure, and Dixonary was one of those things. I think the game was one
of the CompuServe forums, or rather a section in one of the forums.
Possibly it was a section in the TAPCIS forum. Whatever the change was
to CompuServe, it would make TAPCIS obsolete and hence the TAPCIS forum
itself would be obsolete.

Default [Dixonary] OT: How did you get here?

Like Hugo, I discovered Dixonary after I bought the TAPCIS off-line reader
in the days of 9600 bps modem connections. Dixonary was being played in The
Parlour section of the TAPCIS forum. It must have been late1994 and round
593. Of course, as a Brit, I was very familiar with - and loved - the TV
game show "Call My Bluff". That only had three defs per word and had much
longer-winded explanations of the word, but was the same idea.

For those who don't remember TAPCIS, it was a wonderful tool. I'd not long
before got myself on line and joined CompuServe. I started lurking in a
few forums and racking up huge bills for my online time. The CS forums
used to tell you when other members entered and left the forum, and I
couldn't understand how people were entering and leaving again within 10 to
15 seconds - of course they were using an online reader. Using TAPCIS my
bills fell to a fraction of what they'd been before.

Dan - it would be great if you could get Theresa (wasn't she "Rules
Mother"?) back here for an anniversary. The question is, which will we get
to first - 30 years or Round 3000?

Default Re: [Dixonary] OT: How did you get here?

Ryan,

I joined in early June, 2012 - later than many of the long-term participants who have posted replies already. My first definition was "resulting from expansion or contraction due to temperature change" for CATAGMATIC, which John Barrs posted for round 2311 on June 3. It got one vote, from Bill Bensburg who is no longer active. I won round 2316, MADREPORE, with "an herb, about 6" (15cm) tall with light blue flowers, native to the British Isles." My first deal was a bit of a disaster, but the other players cut this newbie a lot of slack and it got better after that.

I got involved after I had been answering questions from English learners in Word Reference Forum for a while. One of its other members, Dodi Schultz ("Parla" there) concluded from my posts that my mind worked in the right(?) way for Dixonary and invited me to join. I had played similar paper-and-pencil games with friends earlier, so I took to it and have been hooked ever since. Sadly, Dodi passed away in mid-2016, but I think of her when people discuss the "old days." At least one other Dixonary player is also active in WRF's English forum now. I know this because his handle resembles his real name. There may be others who aren't as easy to identify.

By the way, regarding "none of us have been around since the very beginning:" I think Dave Cunningham, who started in round 63, comes pretty close. Mike Shefler (162) and Chris Carson (215) aren't far behind.

Ryan

I have been in the computer 'game' in various ways since 1962. My early
years were in university doing research - I remember the joy when I was
connected to the computer by a land-line teletype and could thus work in
my own office instead of typing cards and walking them across. When,
several years later, (1979) I eventually started earning money using my
computing skills, connections were then DOS based via acoustic couplers
to ordinary telephone lines and a local service like an ISP at some rate
like a few bits per minute. (come to think of it, almost everything was
DOS based) Later came compuserve and I must have been pretty early in
there. I didn't use TAPCIS as my reader but one called OZWIN which was
very good at controlling compuserve forums etc (part of my job then was
running a couple of support forums)- compuserve had a forum running a
dixionary like game (whose name I forget) which I played for several
years. When compuserve went graphic (based on an AOL type interface) and
got very slow and difficult then the person who had maintained ozwin
went over to tapcis and I followed him - he mentioned this game and I
joined then - I am not sure of date but it was round 1528 which is about
July 1995 (I think, Mike Shefler is the person who keeps all that kind
of data) and I have been here ever since

I had always liked playing the paper, pen & dictionary game when I was
younger, but didn't often get the chance, so I went looking for it online
(figuring that you can find most things online). I started in mid 2014 with
the word GRAWLIX and first won the deal 34 rounds later. Apart from you,
Ryan, I'm the newbie here. A few other people have started since I did, but
none has lasted long. I've also gone out to various websites seeking more
players, but with little luck, so if you know of any others who would like
to play, feel free to invite them.

I'll weigh in on this in a bit. It is the most chaotic time of the year at
my work, and I generally play on my breaks, because my laptop at home needs
a severe update.

Is there an archive of the games at all? Besides here? Are here and
CompuServe the only places this game has been hosted?

Ryan

there are a couple of people who keep records - for instance; because we
do not allow previously played words* I have a list of all words played
and maintain it on dixonary.net Used word list. also there are a set of
archives files there which claim "provides tolerably complete verbatim
coverage of past rounds" and play statistics are also published there by
Mike Shefler
