Retired from teaching school, still trying to make good photographs, doing some engineering consulting and walking the dog.

It does seem that some of the old regulars are busy elsewhere. We miss them.

no, they are still around. some of them wish (like me) they were retired too, but cant afford to be - awefully busy. just dont ask me how one feels being busy closing down offices that took 20 years to set up.

greetings - heinz -

PS: anyone here still using the AOL/COMPUSERVE box that was set up when CS closed? can you check if you see any changes as of yesterday? when composing mssgs, there used to be a drop-down menu for the sending addrs (like the old numeric one vs the new alias) - that seems to have vanished. so much for the promise we could keep our old numeric ones ...

Heinz, My CIS xxxxx.xxxx@compuserve.com is still serving me as my primary email.

I check the AOL/Compuserve box regularly for spam that I might need to have seen.

mine too, and when i use it with the numeric and POP clients, it is fine. mail with the numric addrs also comes in, no problem. but when using WEBMAIL, the fold down option to use the numeric addrs is gone, and all outgoing mail carries the alias name only. can someone across the ocean check this?

it has had hickups before, so let hope this is one.

Heinz, I believe webmail just uses the letter-name and not the numeric-name.

I use an email client so this is not a problem for me. My email client is set to display the numeric-name.

not till yesterday, pete, for sure. see above: it gave you an option on each and every mail.

Heinz, Someone on the CIS Help Board can probably answer whatever your question is about Compuserve Classic email.

peter, tks, did post it there, but its a weekend, so lets see what monday brings. what i had asked here was basically if anyone still uses the CS webmail (!) with a numeric addrs and has seen the same thing. or if it was just me ...

or was it just an excuse to find out how everybody is doing here? many of you i really miss.

well, it didnt work. posted the question about the missing fold-down option in CS WEBMAIL on the forum there,
and a moderator (actually THE main moderator, and a very knowledgable one at that) came back with answers like ...

... stick to using a POP3 mail client

... I no longer use it as all I ever see in my CompuServe mailbox is spam

... the classic service is now moribund ... advise you to start using a new ISP at your earliest convenience

well, these might be the sign on the wall for those few of us still using the old CS names, converted to AOL or not.

sad. have to admit, i did believe those promises in may 2009.

I've been mucho swamped with work, house, work, house, and work. I swing by here every couple of weeks or so, but typically I have about five minutes to read and run.

The person who replied to you is not "THE main moderator." Given the lack of a gavel next to his name, it's not clear that he's even on staff.

I don't keep in touch with the people in that forum, but if it's important to you, I would suggest reposting, asking that the forum manager escalate the issue to AOL.

mike, thanks and good to hear from you anyhow. hope you are doing well (aside from the houseworks).
but swamped with work still sounds better than 2009, looking for work.

''THE main moderator'' i said because he seems to be answering 99% of the questions - often not with
much patience, but at least he answers.

re-posting is not easy there, post seem to get checked and 'censored' before they actually appear.
posted something of a followup last night, twice, it never showed up.

proof of the pudding, by the way. strange thing is, it was back for a few hours late last night, then
vanished again. server issue? there is to my knowledge no way one can choose the server one logs in to.

By a bit over 750 km. It's still scary, though. I've been to conferences there not all that long ago and have been in some of those buildings that are now piles of rubble.

Ah, I see now. Not only is Auckland on the North Island, but in its north third as well. Glad to hear all is well. Now, time for me to study NZ geography...

Thanks, Heinz. Given what we've seen, I would believe it was a temporary thing... perhaps an unintended consequence that got corrected, rather than an intentional removal of the feature.

I haven't had any insight into the workings of the mail system for over a year, so I'm pretty much useless from a support POV.
