Re: [Dixonary] Question

Hi Debbie,

The official rule, if I recall correcttly, is that the word has to come
from an "accepted dictionary". Which of course is quite open to
interpretation. Based on historic observation, all the "well known"
English dictionaries are accepted, plus several online dictionaries of
the English language. The Phrontistery has been debated but generally
accepted.

Non-English dictionaries are not allowed, apart from a short period, I
think ssomewhere between rounds 1000 and 1200 or so, where I had been
given permission to deal words from a Dutch dictionary. That experiment
proved to be unsuccessful and since then the game is back to English
dictionaries only.

The word from the last round was from dictionary.com, and includes an
etymology that explains it as a Maori word that was included in the
English language in the past.
I do now know about older words as I don't keep messages from older rounds.

Cheers,
Hugo

Hugo and Efrem, that helped a lot, thanks! Opens things up a little bit, I
think.

(I'm not Jewish but lizard meat is definitely not kosher!)

It is indeed Hawai'ian. It's the Hawai'i state fish, also known (in more conventional English) as the reef triggerfish or the rectangular triggerfish.

More information on Wikipedia (the first part of which name is also Hawai'ian) here <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reef_triggerfish>.

Re: [Dixonary] Question

We did an experiment a ways back in which we allowed Dutch words (primarily
when Hugo Kornelis was dealing). I'm not sure there was ever any official
ruling on it, but we kind of ended up deciding against continuing that.

I think English-based languages are okay, though, and there's really
nothing fundamentally different from a Kiwi woid/def as the infamous
[Scots.] defs that always get posted!

I almost voted for the fern, by the way, and would have *except* that it
specifically called out New Zealand, and I thought "there's no way Shani
would deal a New Zealand word, that's someone's fake def"! Turns out I
was double bluffed.

Re: [Dixonary] Question

Actually it was both a word and someone's fake def (combined ).

I always state the dictionary that my word comes from for the avoidance of
any doubt.

How about "pseudohippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia"?

English is pretty much in the German class about being able to add prefixes
and suffixes!

And Dutch?

[Dixonary] Question

So far no one has addressed my question:

Do I tell a submitter that I've combined his or her definition with another? If the definitions aren't exactly the same but too similar to separate them, how do I decide how to combine them? This is a new issue for me!
