[Dixonary] Dixonary Round 3155: ZEMBLETEE [Results]
Dixonary Round 3155: ZEMBLETEE [Results] When John Barrs submitted his def, he said he suspected the real def was “April Fool joke”. But it wasn’t, is was 8: “Obs. rare. by zembletee, in appearance.” I took this from an old list of candidate words, and when I went back to the OED to check it, I discovered that the article had been revised in the meantime, and the headword was now semblety. This reflects no new evidence, just a change of editorial policy. In a printed dictionary, putting the article under S and a cross-reference under Z would have cost both money and convenience, money because cross-references are expensive to print, and convenience because any user would search for it under Z, as the only extant citations have a z.
In an online dictionary, such concerns no longer apply. But the def seemed obvious for semblety and so I used the OED2 article instead, to preserve the weird (or, to use the OED2’s trenchant label, “illiterate”) form zembletee. Two players guessed it even so. One was Tim Lodge, whose doppelgänger (5) also got 4 votes, giving him the deal with 6 points. 1.
