View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2271: Cast Your Votes!

Dodi Schultz
January 7th, 2012, 11:22 PM
We have, below, a total of 21 definitions for APROSEXIA, one of which was
faithfully copied from an honest-to-goodness dictionary; the other 20 were
supplied by the fertile imaginations of your fellow players. Choose the two
you think most likely to be the real thing; vote publicly, by direct reply
to this message.

Didn't submit a def? You may still vote. Brand new to the game? Yes, you
too. But you may NOT vote if you realize, on seeing the list, that you
recognize the real definition; should that occur, please notify me by
private e-mail.

Deadline for casting your vote: Monday 9 January, 11 a.m. EST; that's 8
a.m. on our left coast, 9 or 10 mid-country; 4 p.m. in England; 5 p.m. in
the Netherlands; and 3 a.m. Tuesday for the Australians.

1. eelgrass.

2. the flannel bush.

3. a sixfold symmetry.

4. a galley with six rows of oars.

5. having an extra Y chromosome.

6. a disease affecting the optic nerve.

7. abnormal inability to sustain attention.

8. delirious fumbling with bedclothes, etc.

9. a common garden plant with red flowers.

10. in botany, a class of plants having six stamens.

11. want of tact or grace of manner; social inaptness.

12. the condition of having six fingers or toes; polydactylism.

13. the process by which a queen bee mates with multiple drones.

14. an unnatural attraction, or fetish, for women dressed as a French maid.

15. aftershave favored by the Inner Mongolian Bearded Ladies & Dusky Yaks
Association.

16. a rare condition, mostly from brain injury, where the sufferer can
speak only in poetry.

17. _Med._ a syndrome where the ligaments of the left and right thmbs are
reversed in position.

18. of imperfectly formed (or even absent) basidia in some puffballs,
especially geastrales.

19. a mitochondrial genetic disorder caused by mutations in the
non-chromosomal DNA of mitochondria.

20. a flower of the hibiscus family, scarlet with a white strip down the
center of each petal, and deeply scented.

21. an informally-stated syllogism with an unstated assumption that must be
true for the premises to lead to the conclusion.

I'll take 14 and 15 because .... (I'm still thinking)

Steve Graham

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too
dark to read. Groucho Marx

14. an unnatural attraction, or fetish, for women dressed as a French maid.

15. aftershave favored by the Inner Mongolian Bearded Ladies & Dusky Yaks
Association.

I'm tempted to follow Steve after the French maids and Mongolian
bearded ladies (is Fernando back?), but I'll go for two pseudo-
scientific ones:

On the grounds that our society is increasingly becoming like it and that
there should be a word to describe it I will go for that absent attention
span; and the other icon of our society, the delirious twitching of
bedclothes, then has to have a vote as well (although I am surprised that
they can think about anything for long enough to succeed in getting into
bed)

thats #7 and #8 for me please

The coincidence of times is due to the fact that Bill's messages to the
Google group were diverted to the moderation queue, because he is a new
member, and they both were released at the same time.

I've changed his status in the group so this won't happen again.

I am going to be really upset if it turns out to be #14!

I am voting for #5 and #20, not because I think they are right, but because
I have no idea and just picked those.

I think I'd like to buy some of #15 for my next shave.

I'm more than an hour late, but would like to cast votes for

5. having an extra Y chromosome.

and

10. in botany, a class of plants having six stamens.

as well as inquiring if Fernando (15.) has returned.

Thanks,

Sorry, Chuck, but this was even later than that. It didn't arrive here
until close to 2 p.m., in fact. I'd already posted the results, which
reveal the author of the Fernando-ish #15: our usually staid and sober
Recorder of Rolling Scores.
