Our holiday edition has garnered a total of 17 definitions for YARPHA, one
of which came from an actual dictionary. Please vote for your two
favorites, by public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 7:00
PM EST on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, or 4:00 PM PST .

1. A species of skink found only in sub-Saharan Africa.
2. A type of Ottoman knife or short sabre used from the
mid-16th to late 19th centuries.
3. The annual hiring fair [Sc obs. literally _the year
fair_].
4. An alternate name for _ypsilon alpha_, now generally
referred to as _upsilon alpha_ as a rare variant in the
Greek alphabet.
5. Traditional Turkic headdress for women.
6. Stalagmite-like mineral deposits found in some volcanic
lakes.
7. A person who returns from the dead; a reanimated
corpse; a ghost. Also fig.
8. A highly prized female Mongolian yak used for pure
breeding, the milk of which is believed to have
rejuvenating qualities.
9. (Arch.) An assemblage of three or more pieces of
timber, or a metal member, forming a frame around an
opening, and serving to maintain the integrity of that
opening; also, a ring of stone serving a similar purpose,
as at the eye of a dome.
10. (Sl.) A type of canned Christmas pudding issued to
British troops in the Middle East during World War II;
hence (derog.) any inferior canned food.
11. A square fence of thorn-bushes; a fortified camp.
12. A West African stew typically made of root vegetables,
cereal grains, and peas or okra.
13. A bonus; an extra allowance.
14. Reindeer stew.
15. _Scots_ A peat bog.
16. An oat-like cereal grass of the Caucasus.
17. Intestines (usually goat or sheep) prepared for strings
