For those of you who use, or once used, WordPerfect and may have
participated in the WPUSERS/WPSG forum on CompuServe: you may remember
Jack. I heard from his wife Ann today that Jack died this past April
after a battle with lung cancer.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Jack was so knowledgeable and always very helpful. How old was he; do you know?

I don't know how old he was, Judy, but he has been retired for awhile,
so I'd guess late 60s to early 70s.

He was probably the most prolific answerer of questions on the forum. So
prolific that I wondered whether he had a way to make the day longer
than 24 hours!

I recall the name only very vaguely, Guerri. Mostly, as soon as I found Ed
Mendelson's comprehensive Website, I started hanging out there. I've just
discovered, much to my surprise, that it still exists, takes Win 7 into
account, was updated in Oct of this year, and will doubtless be helpful to
me now. For anyone else who may be interested, it's at:

http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos

The acknowledgements on the homepage include Jack Waananen.

There's also a forum site I've discovered:

http://www.wpuniverse.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?49-DOS-WordPerfect

(Mendelson is one of the moderators), but one never knows what will or
won't be covered in a forum.

I use www.wpuniverse.com for my WordPerfect questions. I met Jan Berinstein, a co-administrator of wpuniverse, many years ago -- probably on CompuServe. At one point she was going to be in Albany, NY (when we were still living there), and we met for lunch at a local Chinese restaurant. We haven't kept in close touch, but we do "touch base" occasionally, usually when I post a WP question.

Hope you don't mind my reminiscing...

I knew about Ed Mendelson's site, but had forgotten about it. I now use
a Windows version of WP, and I think there is a later version that I
should consider. Usually I avoid upgrades until dragged kicking and
screaming into them, but my current version will not allow me to insert
my own digital photos without fooling around, and maybe the newer
version will. Have to find out, but not right now.

I should let Ed Mendelson know about Jack.

WordPerfect was the first real word processing software I learned. I had
used SuperWriter (if anyone remembers that) when I was working on my first
PC, a 10Mb affair that had two 5 1/4 inch floppy drives. Yikes!

I loved WordPerfect. Its only real flaw was that it had not existed in the
1960's when I was typing English Lit papers on onion skin paper in the days
before they had even invented correction tape.

Same here -- and I finally went to X5 a few months ago.

What version are you using? WP11 and now X5 allow me to do that (if we're talking about the same thing!).

I am using X3. There is some reason it will not handle my camera's
photos without tinkering, but I forget the details. Something to do with
the ratio of pixels. Some people told me about it and there were ways to
adjust the photos so WP would accept them.

If you want to experiment, I can Email you one and you can see whether
X5 will accept it as is.

That would be fine.
