I think these are all fake -- or all real (except for mine, of course) -- or...oh, well. Time to guess. Verb? Noun? Oy!!

Okay. I'll vote for these "short and sweet" definitions:

<< 4. a minor Turkish official

<< 7. of equivalent power or strength

Johnny

I find it hard to believe that it's a parsnip, so I'll vote for that
one. I think it's unlikely to be brainwashing so my other vote goes
to that.

OK -- recalling the "good old days" ... If it meant "co-" something,
it would not have the double m... ruling out 1, 9, 16 and 19.
Ruling out "command" in all forms scratches 4, 5, 8, 11, 13, 19
(again) and 20 ...

Leaving 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 15 and 18.

Thinking - it is likely a verb or adjective ... thus not 3, 14 or
17.

Oh heck ... being wrong again I will settle on 12 and 15.

Today is Sinterklaas in the Netherlands and so I’ve been gobbling seasonal cookies such as amandelstaafjes (a pastry roll filled with frangipane), pepernoten (small spicy hemispherical cookies about the size of a fingertip), speculaas (BrE biscuits, spiced with cinnamon and ginger), and chocolate letters.

So I’ll vote for the eating defs: 2 and 5.

Who knows? Numbers 3 and 18 seem as likely as any of the others.

18. to condition a pattern of behavior by repeating the instructions that
cause it to happen [robotics]

Hahaha... 2 (swallow whole) & 5 (chew thoroughly) are exact opposites. What
do you do with that? Give me:

# 6 - prefigure

#10 - inspire by example

Just in time I hope.

The question we all ask is would Mr Barrs offer us one of his vast
store of ancient and obscure words, or would he deal a contrarian
word, something neologism perhaps, or simply something absurd such as
a parsnip? And what would he expect us to expect? I have pondered
many an hour, now I must choose...

.... the robotic parsnip: 3 and 18

Jim
