View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2256 (ABATIS): Time to vote!

Dodi Schultz
November 17th, 2011, 05:32 PM
Several players didn't submit this time around: A mere 17 definitions
for ABATIS appear below, one of which came directly from a real
dictionary. Your challenge is to find that one; you have two chances.
You may vote even if you didn't submit a def of your own. Vote publicly,
by direct reply to this message.

Exception: If you realize on seeing the defs that you recognize the real
one, you must recuse yourself and notify me privately of that (by e-mail
to me; do NOT click "Reply").

Deadline for casting your votes: Friday, 18 November, 11 p.m. EST.
That'll be a bit earlier west of here and Saturday the 19th outside the
US/Canada: 4 a.m. in the UK, 5 a.m. in the Netherlands, 3 p.m. in
Melbourne. I think. (Please let me know about any miscalculations.)

Two very different choices:

<< 8. a biotrophic fungus whose primary host is hullless ("naked")
<< barley.

<< 12. a wild goose, by a flock of which a virtuoso was fabled to
<< be carried
<< from this world.

Dodi, as many times as you've dealt, you should know you're supposed to
include the real def in the list.

Since you omitted it, I'll vote for two obviously fake defs: 12 and 14.

My choices ended up first and last, as it happened: 1 & 17, please.

1. a river of Abyssinia.

Fascinating, but I agree with Dan, you ought to know by now that you should
include the real def - as it obviously isn't there then I'll award points
to the authors of ... um ... #10 and #14

I'll try 12 and 14.

EnDash@aol.com

I'll vote for number 4 because it seems likely and number 15 because it
uses spelling so many players find in the OED.

Otherwise, I'd have chosen the last one on the grounds that it's too weird
to have been made up.

4. a flowering vine of the morning glory family.

15. a defence constructed by placing felled trees lengthwise one over the
other with their branches towards the enemy's lines.

Dodi -

A nice collection. I'll try -

12. a wild goose, by a flock of which a virtuoso was fabled to be
carried from this world.

and

14. [Obs.] any garment of silken or other soft cloth worn under clothing
or armour to prevent skin irritation.

Thanks,

Chuck
