Considering the NY Yankees' current pitching staff, losing this guy hurts a lot.

Agreed...in hindsight. No one knew he'd become that good.

...some knew what AJ would be. <sigh>

Mike,

Agreed, no one knew, but I remember arguing (here) that to lose him was a big mistake.

Meanwhile, the Yankees won a playoff berth today... need to win 3 more I think to win the Division. Then we see how well they do with this pitching staff in the ALDS.

2, and as of now they Yanks are winning and the Bosox are losing. As for the playoffs, we are dead meat. Our pitching is as stable and fragile as a glass vase on a 10th story window ledge...in a wind storm.

No starting pitching (except CC and maybe Nova)...no pennant and no championship.

Mike,

Pitching is fragile, hitting is stupendous.... CC and Nova make a good 1-2 punch... time for that old time religion to kick in all over again in this new millennium:"Spahn and Sain, and pray for rain." <g>

Rain, and opponent slumps. I fear that we will go quietly into the night.

I was happy that Posada contributed the winning hit!

CC and Nova and Garcia too.... six innings tonite against Beantown and Lester and no runs.... add in that Jesus was truly Godzilla with 4 ribbies.... Nine to one was the final. Sweet!

AJ and Hughes out of the bullpen, along with Soriano, Robertson and Mo and some good, noname relievers who have been doing quite well. And the hitters... on a night when A-Rod, Grandy & Texiera did zipola, they still scored 9 runs... up and down this lineup, the Yankees are impressive.

I'm stunned at Boston's collapse. They are only one game up on Tampa. This....the team that was supposed to run away with it and have over 100 wins? I guess that is why you have to play the games.

Now, do the Yanks put the "A" team in for the double header tomorrow (they have nothing to gain) to possibly knock Boston out of the playoffs?

Mike,

A team for sure, as Philly lost the doubleheader to da Mets, we are only one game behind them for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Beantown has been savaged by injuries, but unlike New York, nobody stepped up. Still think Lester and Beckett are one of the best 1-2 combos in the game, but our lineup and bullpen are far better this year than theirs.

Meanwhile Kennedy won his 21st today. <sigh>

I don't know. Boston has fallen into a tie with Tampa Bay. I think if Boston manages to get into the playoffs, they will be formidable. They are too good; they are just all pressing and trying too hard. That lineup and staff in the playoffs is still a force to reckon with.

Mike,

A few days later and a different world. Tampa spanked Texas in the first game of the playoff and Ian Kennedy couldn't throw a stirke as the Diamondbacks fall to Milwaukee... go figure. Tampa looks like a team on fire... I think we made a mistake in not playing our A-Team against them... Boston just kept on saying "I've fallen and can't get up."

CC against the Tiger's ace.... nighttime ball and 98 mph fastballs... brrrr.

Until yesterday when Texas righted their ship. How about Nova? 7 innings plus of shutout ball? He looked cool as can be, no pressure problems.

Can you say our #2 pitcher next year?

Mike,

Can you say we may be in trouble this year? Our offspeed pitcher (Garcia) was only so-so and Max Scherzer threw 97 mph fastballs and 82 mph changeups and nobody hit. And A-Rod is most definitely hurting. A bad thumb means he can't grip the bat properly.

Can CC beat Verlander?

We are doomed. Our season is in AJ's hands, on the road.

See you next year.:(

Mike,

CC gained 20 or more pounds at the end of the season and wasn't the same pitcher. Do we really want to have yet another aging star on the payroll until he goes on Medicare?

Meanwhile, did you see what Phil Coke did to the Rangers tonight? After Verlander gave up a 2 run blast (100 mph! fastball) to Cruz, he came in, got the final 2 outs in the 8th and closed out the 9th too... hasn't had a great season for Detroit, but redeemed himself tongiht. Tigers won and now down 3-2 to the Rangers.

(Yes, I am indulging my baseball jones by fixating on ex-Yankee players still in the hunt.)
