View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2219: HOLUS-BOLUS results

My quest for a D0 was ended early on with the first vote, and the correct
votes didn't stop there. A stunning 8 of you guessed that HOLUS-BOLUS meant
"all at once".

The next-highest vote getter was John Barrs' baptismal font, which collected
4 votes. Adding on 2 points for a correct guess results in JohnnyB having
an uncontested lead with 6 points and the next deal. Steve Graham takes
coveted second place with 5 points. Guerri Stevens takes honorable mention
with 4 points.

I'm giving Judy Madnick 2 DP because of my sloppy editing which included the
word itself in her definition, making it obviously fake and attracting only
a sympathy vote from the dealer-elect.

Take it away, JohnnyB.

Oh Dear.

I believe you're right.

In entering your DQ/def simultaneously I somehow ended up renumbering
things, which somehow ended up with my database at odds with the real order
of things.

And to top things off, I have had to fully restore my system so I'm going to
have to recreate the last round from the start. ARGH.

And the amusing thing, I think John Barrs has already dealt the new woid
with an actual score of 2. (no votes plus 2 for guessing rightŠ)

So sorryŠ.. Has been a horrible weekend for me technologically.

OK, it appears I utterly mangled thisŠ.

After changing a message from "Definition" to "Definition + DQ" it got
renumbered to the end. So I re-sorted the defs. Which ordinarily would
have fixed the problem and on my initial inspection (with 16 of the 18 defs
in the same location) it looked right. But in fact defs 5 and 13 were
exactly the same length and thus sorted in opposite order, so the names/defs
in the results are switched.

For the results, subtract 4 from Barrs and add 4 to Morgan.

This makes Steve Graham the rightful dealer with 5 unnatural pointsŠ

I was and remain a DQ but when I saw the defs I thought both 4 and 18
could be consistent with the usage I'm familiar with. While
dictionaries vary they generally seem to share the sense of things
happening together in space or time but I guess the time element is
dominant.

Interesting to see that Jim and I were the only DQs for HOLUS BOLUS
(yes I know ... Jim did register his properly, whilst I declared mine
prematurely to the world!)
It's quite a common expression here Down Under.

And I agree with Jim about the similarity of 4 and 18, although (rightly or
wrongly) I would normally use holus bolus to mean "things bundled together"
rather than "at the one time". Though I suppose it's pretty much the same
thing.
