View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Spam and Thunderbird

I hope some of you Tbird users will know the answer to this. I am
preparing to close my Yahoo Email accounts. So today I looked at one of
them, and forwarded all the messages I had been saving for whatever
reason to another account. All but two of two of them arrived. I
forwarded one of them again thinking perhaps there had been a temporary
glitch, but it still hasn't arrived.

So I wondered whether Thunderbird thought that these particular messages
were spam. I decided to look at my junk settings, and I have to admit I
don't really understand what's going on. My current settings say "enable
adaptive junk mail controls", "don't mark as junk if sender is in
address book", "move new junk messages to junk folder on" and names my
Email account. But I don't see any folders for the email account itself.
On the left side of the screen I see "all folders" and then "local
folders" beneath which are the inbox, unsent, etc. plus the named
folders I've created.

My memory of the past is that junk arrived in my inbox and was flagged
with a special symbol. So maybe I should uncheck the option to move it,
try the forwarding again, and see what happens.

In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas what might be going on?
Which might have nothing to do with the junk settings and might be some
"feature" on the Yahoo end.

There are various options that can change where junk goes. In the newer versions you can opt for
"unified folders", and then there's a Junk folder with subfolders for each service on which messages
arrive. That's where I look for missing messages. On my setup it comes between Sent and Trash.

Best wishes,
Tim B.

I have version 2.something and I believe Tbird is up to 3.something. In
my list of Local Folders, I see no Junk folder. There is nothing between
Sent and Trash. That makes me think that it is Tbird that would have
set up the Junk folder. I say that because all the "standard" folders
(inbox, unsent, etc.) are listed first, and the folders I created come
at the end.

You mention having one for each "service". Do you mean each "account"? I
have several accounts so that I can retrieve email from different
addresses. But I can't figure out a way to view folders attached to a
particular account. What I see in the left pane is just Local Folders.
Each "account" has its own junk settings. But if I set an account up to
have the junk sent to the junk folder, I don't know how to access that
folder if it is not part of "local folders". There may be information or
settings that I have missed or misunderstood.

Of course, the missing messages may not have been treated as junk but
simply not forwarded by Yahoo for some reason.

I'm on 3.1.10, which is not the newest. I think the handling of junk changed in 3, but I can't
remember how.

Best wishes,

I believe I have found the problem. I thought I'd try forwarding one of
the Emails to a Gmail account. That didn't work either, so I looked at
the Gmail help. And I found this:

========================
Please note that Gmail now enforces DKIM1 signatures for eBay (ebay.com)
and PayPal (paypal.com) messages, in accordance with their requests.

If you're automatically forwarding your mail from another account and
your other account's server breaks the DKIM signature, then the message
will be rejected. Since DKIM does support forwarding, you may be able to
correct the problem by asking the administrator to adjust the way your
other server forwards mail. Otherwise, we suggest configuring your eBay
and PayPal accounts to send directly to Gmail instead.
=======================

The problem message was from PayPal. Evidently the Yahoo server breaks
the DKIM signature when forwarding. tapcis.com Email is now hosted by
Google, so it too will enforce DKIM.

For those who are wondering:

DKIM: DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) is a way to digitally sign
messages and verify that the messages were sent by a particular domain.
It works like a wax seal on an envelope, preventing messages from being
tampered with.

You may have already closed your Yahoo accounts which would make this msg. irrelevant.
But FWIW,
I use the Yahoo webmail extension for T-Bird, and I am hoping that the creator of this extension WILL update it to work with the new Yahoo web mail BEFORE Yahoo forces me to go to the new Yahoo webmail :(
Unfortunately, T-Bird 5.0 is INCOMPATIBLE with this extension too, which throws another uncertainty into the 'equation'.

I think 3.1.10 probably /is/ the newest T'bird release, since 3.1.9 was
just released four months ago. But maybe not; maybe there are new builds
every couple of months.

I have 2.0.0.24, which does list "Junk".

FWIW, it just so happened that a webmail update became available for T bird 5 and I "went for it".
It is too long a story for me to want to tell. But I think I got Yahoo webmail to work in T bird 5 within 30 minutes. Luckily I read the comododragon FAQ and could figure out "how to" without royal mess up. Still haven't dared to try updating my yahoo mail to new yahoo mail <rolling eyes>.

I have not closed my Yahoo Email accounts as yet. I found them less user
friendly because they didn't have POP3 ability, plus their ads seem far
more intrusive than the Gmail ads. So I didn't even know there was a
T-bird extension for Yahoo.

Having said that, Google is making "improvements" and often improvements
are exactly what I don't want. Like icons replacing words. I could
understand not wanting to have to translate things into multiple
languages, but if you can hover over the symbol and get words anyway,
what's the point of the icon? But I digress.

Is T-bird up to 5.0? I thought it was just 3 something.

Is T-bird up to 5.0? I thought it was just 3 something.
Guerri Seems it jumped from 3.1.11 to 5.
Apparently Firefox also did a jump from 4.x to 5.x.
Not so much a jump as a renumbering, I guess.

I am still hoping that the T bird extension for Yahoo will update BEFORE Yahoo forces me to go to their new webmail.

One feature of the extension that some may like is ability to DL msgs from OTHER folders besides INBOX?

I don't quite understand the reference to Yahoo not allowing POP3

I have "*NEVER*" ever logged into my yahoo to read messages, only to change
what happens to the messages (and I have 2 different yahoo addresses) I have
always received the messages via POP3.When I stopped using Outlook with my
new machine I diverted the yahoo messages to be received by gmail and
filtered there to different folders

I don't quite understand the reference to Yahoo not allowing POP3 Maybe yahoo pop3 is free in UK? I'm almost 100% sure yahoo pop3 is not free in USA.

Incidentally, FWIW, some people use the T-bird extension to access their personal WEBMAIL services (by HTTP) which ALSO offer free POP3, because their office LAN proxy/firewall allow POP3 access ONLY to their own office unique POP3 server.

Well, I admit that I have not kept up with Yahoo. When I first got Yahoo
Email addresses, you had to go there to read. POP3 was available, but
not free. I'm guessing Google's mail changed that.
