View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2219: Vote for HOLUS-BOLUS

Daniel Widdis

Sorry for the delay. The good news is that I realized at the deadline that
I'd missed marking several definitions for input. Thanks Toni for alerting
me to your own missing def in the previous list, which alerted me to four
others! I think I have them all. If not, I'll blame a random player. And
now, on with the show:

Below are 18 definitions for HOLUS-BOLUS, only one of which came from a
dictionary. Please vote for two, by public reply to this message, before the
deadline. Given the Independence Day holiday in the US I'll extend the
deadline through Tuesday morning, a little over 38 hours from now (but close
early if all submitters have voted):
8:00am PDT
11:00 am EDT
15:00 UTC
And 1 am Wednesday in Melbourne.

I'll vote for
> 1. a kind of stew (?)

because I never saw a question mark before as part of a def and

> 18. all at once

because—uh, well, I like it.

I'm a sucker for "kind of ..." defs, so I'll go for No. 1, and for my
other vote I'll fall for the Roman interjection, 9.

Definitions invoking further obscurities are always attractive, so I'll choose
that one and the adverbial phrase, 8 and 18:

> 8. a curling error committed by a player ignoring the skip's instructions

> 18. all at once
