View Full Version : [Dixonary] 2193- vote for Baggywrinkle

Jim Hart
March 31st, 2011, 06:05 PM
I was afraid this would be a very slim deal but you came good in the
end with 17 definitions of BAGGYWRINKLE to add to the one I took from
a dictionary.

Be nice, vote twice. You have 34 hours to reply to this message, i.e.
by: 9 am Saturday UTC which for North Americans is I think 2am on left
coast and 5am on the right coast, and 8pm for me.

1. small bundle of hay or straw for resting one's head.

2. a lobster-pot

3. Slang term for medical cannabis that is of low quality.

4. _sl_ a loose fitting gown (Singapore)

5. _British Slang_ A linen suit.

6. Pruney fingers.

7. a disparaging term for the lowland bagpipes, or one who plays
them.

8. a flexible coupling between pipes in a steam-driven threshing
machine.

9. the intestines of sheep, pigs, or cattle, used as sausage skin.

10. a fern of New Zealand whose large, broad leaves are
characterized by deep folds forming a wrinkled appearance

11. rope yarns wound around parts of a ship's rigging to prevent
chafe.

12. (Knitting Mach.) a thin iron plate operated by the jack to
depress the loop of thread between two needles.

13. common name for a sub-genus of slipper orchids with rumpled
pouches [phragmipedium rugosa]

14. an extremely old person.

15. _Colloq_ the periwinkle.

16. a small weed of the burdock family..

17. an old turkey.

18. the fruit of an acacia tree

As I said when I sent my definition -- this is a tough one. So there's no point in my delaying my votes since they are a "major guess" anyhow:

<< 3. Slang term for medical cannabis that is of low quality.

<< 16. a small weed of the burdock family..

Yikes. I haven't a clue. Very odd word (but that's the fun!)... i'll take
5 & 7.

5. _British Slang_ A linen suit.
> 7. a disparaging term for the lowland bagpipes, or one who plays them.

Lots of creative choices!

I'll go with the disparaging term for old lowland scots: 7 and 14.

This is like buying a pig in a poke. I am going to bite on:

10. a fern of New Zealand whose large, broad leaves are
characterized by deep folds forming a wrinkled appearance. (Kiwis and
Aussies are close, geographically, for whatever that may be worth.)

AND

7. a disparaging term for the lowland bagpipes, or one who plays
them. (Simply because if it is not the real def, it deserves recognition for
imagination).

They're all, um, interesting. The first is just odd enough to qualify,
and of the half-dozen possible plants, the last looks likely. That'll be

and

My votes go to:

5. *_British Slang_ A linen suit.

and

15. *_Colloq_ *the periwinkle.

Um, plants and colloquial slang, its got to be the latter: so I'll go for
#11 and #12 please because they do not lead me to think of bags or wrinkles

Tough, but I'll go for:

8. a flexible coupling between pipes in a steam-driven threshing
machine.

characterized by deep folds forming a wrinkled appearance

Well, I don't see my definition here. I sent it yesterday (Thursday), 31-Mar-2011 at
08:31am EDT (1231 UTC), which was well within the deadline.

Probably just as well, really; I doubt anyone would have voted for it.

I'll take 3 for irresistibility and 11 for unlikeliness:
