I used to watch the U-2's take off at Bien Hoa air base in Vietnam in summer of 1965. The way they lifted up quickly and disappeared was quite impressive.

Try an English Electric Lightning for 'vertical take-off'! Little more than 2 jet engines with a seat on top. "Want to climb 2 Everests in 3 minutes"
