Almost the only software that used Oracle Java (formerly Sun Microsystems Java) on my PC's was the US National Weather Service radar loops (in the web browser) and Open Office. The radar loops now use Flash on the NWS site. And apparently Open Office only needs Java (JRE) for some database functions, which I don't use. I use Open Office for spreadsheets and text documents a little bit.

So I uninstalled Java JRE, since if I don't use it, it merely serves as another potential security hole in the world of plug-ins that can run in browsers.

Why not just disable in the control panel? Then you can re-enable it if/when needed, instead of having to install at that time (when you may be in a hurry).

Good idea. Never thought of it.
