View Full Version : [Dixonary] lost thread?

I'm confused. I dont get all messages emailed to me, instead I get the
daily digest and then usually read and reply via the Google Groups
site.

Today the digest includes quite a lot of discussion under the heading
"Topic: Acceptable Dictionaries" but when I go to the forum that topic
is not listed. Nor have I found it hidden inside another topic which
sometimes happens if someone changes the heading midstream.

Maybe I just haven't searched far enough. But it's still frustrating
that the digest doesn't correspond to the group site. Can anyone cast
light on this?

Addendum:

OK, just found it in the depths of Cabomba Results which included
several heading changes. When I first linked to the 'Acceptable
Dictionaries' thread from my digest email, Google only showed me the
first 25 definitions which didn't include the discussion I wanted. But
when I open the same thread from the group site index I see all 52.

JH> Can anyone cast light on this?

Unfortunately (?), Google Groups tracks email message headers and attempts
to keep threads together even when the subject line changes. Unlike a
bulletin board where splitting or merging threads and changing the subject
maintains some consistency, renaming a thread on reply is bound to produce
inconsistent results depending on one's email client (or use of the web
interface for google groups).

I recommend two solutions:

1. Senders of emails which change subjects should begin a new email rather
than reply to an existing email, thus preventing the two threads from being
automatically linked together.

2. Readers who desire a web-based view of this game should follow it in the
"Parlor" section of www.tapcis.com, which we've tweaked to handle threads as
intelligently as possible, and tends to be more predictable than the
GoogleGroups site.

Thanks Dan. I didn't know (or had forgotten) about the tapcis site.
I'll have a look.
