View Full Version : [Dixonary] PENSTOCK -- Defs Up -- Please Vote

We have fewer definitions than usual , and I hope it is not due to the
confusion I caused by inadvertently using the word "prebend" in the subject
line of my reminder -- although most definitions were sent in before the
reminder was posted.

The word was next, on a list I keep of potential word choices in the event
of taking the dealership, to the actual word for this round, which is
PENSTOCK, so I suppose it just popped into my head when it shouldn't have; and I
am sorry for the inconvenience I may have caused you. I will, of course,
have to scrub prebend from my ready-to-use file, so just for the record,
here is what it means according to the AHD4:

A stipend drawn from the endowment or revenues of an Anglican cathedral or
church by a presiding member of the clergy; a cathedral or church benefice.

Now back to our real word, PENSTOCK.

Here are 18 definitions, all fictitious except for one, which comes from a
dictionary. You are invited to vote for any two and send your vote to the
group in a public message. Deadline for voting will be tomorrow, Sunday, at
4:00 PM Eastern Time, or your local equivalent.

1: livestock normally confined in small enclosures, rather than larger
grazing animals

2: _obs_ a gaggle of geese

3: a sturdy walking stick used in hilly country

4: a conduit that supplies water to a hydroelectric power plant

5: an upright post to which hurdles are attached to form a temporary
livestock enclosure

6: a prebend that is paid in kind

7: an insolent fellow in authority

8: a primitive bridge made from a single slab of stone

9: [obs.] material goods given when a worker leaves a job

10: yarn used for warp

11: feed composed of ground up animal parts, usually fed to the same breed
of animal

12: [N. Eng. Dial.] a place of pilgrimage; a retreat or redoubt. _rare_

13: watchful care

14: nutritious feed provided to ewes in the few weeks before mating to
improve fertility, or in the period before birth to increase lamb birth-weight

15: _Nautical_ a piece of hardwood on either side of a bowsprit through
which forestays are reeved

16: a corral for pigs

17: a verse which is in limerick metre, but has serious content

18: a weed of the woodsorrel family common to the U.S. Southwest, having
trilobate, cloverlike leaves and small, bright-pink flowers; also called
Ladylove

I would have been DQ on that!

I'll have 8 and 10, please.

Best wishes,

One reason you have fewer defs*(at least one fewer) is because I spaced out and
didn't look for theposting.

I'll go for 7 and 18 please.
