Currently using Gmail's web interface in Firefox. I'll report if it's
different in IE. And I'll report when I get home tonight if it's
different in MS Outlook.

I see a black diamond with a white question mark inside with the whole
thing followed by a horizontal line (em dash) and then your name.

Using Thunderbird, Windows Vista. But my settings in T-bird make have
some effect on this.

If I go into the Google group, I see a question mark followed by three
dashes; using Firefox.

Your message comes to me in two parts, plain text and HTML, both using the
Latin-1 character encoding.

Plain text: three minus signs

HTML: a box (unassigned character) and an em dash.

The source for the HTML section shows the mystery character is an HTML entity
for code 141, which does not have a standard glyph in Latin-1 and shows as the
little box for me. The other is entity code 8212, which is the Unicode em dash.

The Bat!, Windows XP.

That's via an older version of Eudora, and Windows XP.

including their quotebacks,Â*I see what they say they see!Â* three hyphens and two
hyphens for Widdis, for example.Â* Even though I see the empty square and long

I see nothing at all below your name, whether viewing in plain text or HTML. In plain text your name
is preceded by a question mark and three dashes; in HTML view the question mark is inside a black
diamond. But there is nothing below your name.

This is with Thunderbird on Linux.

I'm fascinated as well. The original message had an attractive black
diamond with white ? mark in it, followed by a dash (n, m, oh ? - not
certain), but when it was quoted back (in Thunderbird on XP home) the
diamond was Keith Hale's .png image of a box with 008D in it, and in the
quoteback below the diamond and box are both gone. I'm wondering what
Thunderbird will show me on my iBook G4?
