View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 1637, CLARTY: Da Defs!
Dodi Schultz
August 19th, 2005, 10:29 AM
Sorry for the slight delay. I thought AutoDealer was malfunctioning. Uh,
no. AutoDealer was behaving quite properly. The malfunction was elsewhere.
Don't ask. Please.
Some of our regulars seem to be off on vacation this round. Below, a mere
16 defs for CLARTY, the real one among them. Interestingly, the defs are
evenly divided: precisely half are nouns, half adjectives.
Vote for the two you think most likely true, by number, posting your
choices publicly. As Paul has pointed out, you may choose to give reasons
(misleading or other) for your selections. Or not.
Deadline for casting votes: Saturday, 20 August, 11:30 p.m. EDT.
Good luck!

Hi Dodi,
> The malfunction was elsewhere. Don't ask. Please.
Okay, I won't. But the malfunction obviously also caused the real def to be
missing from your posting.
I'll award my 2 points to the creative authors of
> 4. _Scot._ a kind of scotch.
> 14. _Scot._ clotty or coagulated; said of blood, soured cream, or prose.
Best, Hugo

I've got to vote for "_Scot._ a kind of scotch." because it made me laugh.
What's next? _Fr._ a kind of french? And I'll vote for the wedgie too, on
the off chance it's true and I can start using it in everyday speech.
That's 4 and 15 please.

I'll pick the carbonado, because I don't know what it is, and the
Scots priggish, because it might just be right.
3 and 8 please.

I'll forego the Scots stuff, but in tribute to my ancestors, I'll pick the two with booze that sound delicious to me,
12 and 13 (only for the hard cider)

My votes:
2. ambiguous.
Why? Because the "i" is left out, otherwise it would be "clarity", which is pretty much the opposite of "ambiguous." Or something like that.
16. jazz, folk, or country music played by performers who use
unconventional instruments such as kazoos, washboards, or jugs,
sometimes in combination with conventional instruments.
Why? Because I like it (to paraphase Mister Rogers). It sounds like a great, fun idea! Can I join the clarty band?

Hmmm ... that's quite a nice list of defs. I'm going to work on the
assumption that the Scots and Irish are decoys and being a diverse imbiber
of long standing, particularly of that heavenly nectar from God's Country,
uisge beatha, I'll toss those out of consideration. I rather like 3, 6, 10
and 16 but since we're limited to two choices, I'll go for ....
6 and 10, old basalt and spongy.

I'm so taken with the cleverness of the Polish typewriter idea that
I'm voting 1 and 11 despite the dictates of common sense.

The random number generator tells me to pick # 7 and # 9, which appear

Thanks,
Chuck
