I found this Round a most unusual one to deal. First off, the word SOUGH
was chosen (by me) in its form pronounced as "sow," as in bough, a less
familiar pronunciation than the more commonly encountered sounding of "-ough" as
"-oo" like in through, "-uff " like in rough, or "-aw" like in ought. I
thought, mistakenly as it turned out, that this would help baffle most
players.

The "sow" pronunciation is the only one given by Harper Collins for the
meaning used for the Round. However, that dictionary lists a second
pronunciation, with the -uff sound; but that has an entirely different definition --
of being a Northern England dialect term for a sewer drain or outlet
channel.

A few players declared themselves DQ right off the bat, as they knew the
word. Then, a couple mailed me to say they sort of suspected that the
definition was such and such but weren't sure. In some cases their suspicions were
in the ballpark but far enough out in left field that, in my judgement,
they should not be DQ; and I didn't list them as such.

Then, after the definition list was posted, one or two players "recognized"
the correct definition from the depths of memory and declared themselves
DQ at that point in the Round. Thus, we have more DQs than usual; but I
think it was an interesting and well-played Round nevertheless.

But enough of boring background. On to the results you'veall been waiting
