View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Cartoons don't come through

Perhaps the tech mavens among us can comment on this puzzlement:

A correspondent has recently attempted to forward some cartoons from the
Yahoo News website. They don't arrive; the communication shows up in my
inbox either completely blank or with an apparent ellipsis [...] where
the message ought to be.

Not that the transmission is vital (and when I advise the sender of the
problem, a link is sent, and I get to see the funny stuff), but I'm
curious as to why this happens.

Some details, if it helps: My correspondent's using AOL software,
incorporating a built-in browser (said to be an IE variant) and
e-mailing facility. My e-mail client is Thunderbird. ISP for both of us:
Verizon.

I don't know when the AOL application was last updated, but it's a safe
prediction that it's getting a bit outdated. Possibly the sender *thinks* he's
attaching an actual image (i.e., the cartoon), but really isn't. This
possibility is enhanced by the general level of technical expertise possessed
by those who continue to prefer the all-in-one AOL client application over
separate, standard email clients and web browsers. It will be difficult to
come to any more definite conclusions from what you've told us so far.

Thanks, Tony! I'll suggest that the operation be tried with separate
browser and e-mail client. (My correspondent reports having separate
browsers but hasn't been using them for this; dunno about separate
e-mail client.)

My AOL is their latest, Version 9.6. Next time I find a toon to send, I'll
try it via a different browser.

Meanwhile, here is a picture inserted from my own hard drive. Does it come
through?
