As few of us have crowns to lower, I thought this word had
possibilities.

I looked up the word after I voted (wrongly). Most dictionaries give
something like the def Dave used. Interestingly, one dictionary also
gives a second definition—uncannily similar to the one above. See:

The OED does. I found it eventually after searching through the five
headword occurrences of VAIL, all of which have complex multiple
definitions!

I used the New Oxford American on my iPad - it seems a fairly
comprehensive dictionary, to be sure, and only gives the single
definition.

I'm very generous with my votes. They're hardly ever bestowed on real definitions; I like to spread them around among my fellow players' admirable creations.
