A nice even seventeen defs to choose from - pick two even. Do it
before 6 a.m. Monday, and you will be richly rewarded. As always, all
errors are the fault of the dealer.
1. A large, round hat.
2. a Corinthian magistrate overseeing the selection of juries in
capital cases.
3. A lighter, or vessel for inland navigation.
4. a bird of tropical American forests, with a long tail and
brilliantly colored plumage.
5. a small shield used by the ancient Greeks.
6. a polynomial consisting of three terms.
7. In the TV cartoon show "Transformers", an animated skyscaper that
can morph into a flying battleship.
8. in equestrian events, a failure to negotiate an obstacle.
9. a luffing crane tank locomotive.
10. A troglodyte.
11. a ventilation shaft esp. for cave dwellings; an auxiliary shaft
in an
opal mine.
12. Asia, N Africa: bearded vulture [Gr, _tragus_ = goat]
13. a scraper used by early hominids.
14. In ancient Rome, the senior servant of a household, often a freed
slave.
15. a many-sided polygon [Gk trókhos 'wheel' + -gon f. polygon]
16. _Nautical_ A light tackle having double or treble blocks, used to
hoist or tighten rigging.
17. a proposed but never observed inert element heavier than Radon.

Let's get this over with since I have no idea!
<< 2. a Corinthian magistrate overseeing the selection of juries
<< in
<< capital cases.
<< 5. a small shield used by the ancient Greeks.

My votes go to:

and

I'm sorry to report that it should have been 18; mine was sent at least
three hours before your deadline. All of the other e-mails I sent today
seem to have reached their destinations, so I don't think the fault was
at this end.
I'll try the birds:

I'll go for a light and a lighter ...

hoist or tighten rigging.

The birds are tempting, so I'll have one of them and the hominid scraper to
go with it
#4 and #13 please

Dave,
An interesting collection. I'll try -
4. a bird of tropical American forests, with a long tail and brilliantly
colored plumage.
and
5. a small shield used by the ancient Greeks.
Thanks,
Chuck

The only two that seem plausible to me are 13 and 15:
> 13. a scraper used by early hominids.
> 15. a many-sided polygon [Gk trókhos 'wheel' + -gon f. polygon]
