View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2168: GLUTTER [Announcement]

Paul Keating
December 27th, 2010, 04:14 PM
The last time I did this, about 13 years ago, I got blasted for lack
of humility (or patience, or conformance to good form), but the
outcome of Round 2167 hasn't been in doubt for 36 hours and there's no
longer any good reason to wait.So blast away, if you like.

The word for round 2168 is

*******************
* *
* G L U T T E R *
* *
*******************

Capitalization is not significant.

Please concoct a fake definition for this word that you think your
fellow players will find plausible, or entertaining, or both.

Newcomers to the game are always welcome: your task is to induce the
other players to vote for your fake definition rather than the real
one. You will find the full rules at http://rules.dixonary.net but
they can be summarized thus:
1. Don't look the word up.
2. Make up a fake definition and email it to me.
3. Check back here after the deadline.

The deadline for submissions is on Tuesday 28 December 2010 at

23:00 PST
23:59 MST

and on Wednesday 29 December 2010 at

01:00 CST
02:00 EST
07:00 GMT/UTC
08:00 CET for me
and 18:00 EDT in Melbourne.

You can use the email address coryphaeus (AT) prodigycomputing (DOT) com to
submit definitions. This is not a requirement: other email addresses
you have for me will also work.

Please put "2168" or "GLUTTER" in the subject line. This makes
incoming game messages easier to manage, and makes checking for emails
stuck in spam filters less unpleasant.

I never saw the results for round 2167 posted. If someone could email them
to me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Mike

No "blasting," Paul, but I do admit to some curiosity. It's just a
couple of hours past the voting deadline for round 2167. Why not at
least wait for Chris to post the results of that round? What's the huge
hurry? It's not as if the sky will fall if it waits a couple of hours.
(Anyway, the sky already fell. On New York. Last night.)

They haven't been posted yet. But they will be.

They haven't been.

Why not at least wait? Because it's nearly midnight here and I won't be awake enough and available to post a def until 18h00 tomorrow, nearly a day away. No need to make the majority of the players in the Western Hemisphere wait till I get back from work.

The convention in Holland is that if Christmas falls on Saturday, then Boxing Day falls on Sunday, and on Monday you back to work. So I can be forgiven, this year and about every 6 years, for not wishing anyone Happy Holidays, since there's no holiday for me. (Bah! Humbug!)

Oh, right. Here in North America, we have nothing else to do. We just
hang around waiting for Dixonary words to be posted.

And here I've been complaining because the approximately 2" we got
hasn't melted yet! How are things up there? Have you been able to get out?

The convention in Britain is that in these circumstances the two public holidays then become Monday
and Tuesday, so no work for most of us until tomorrow.

:)

Best wishes,

Is your spam filter especially delicate and easily offended? I hadn't
realised there was a danger of my defs getting shunted off to
spamland. Unless of course my subject line was something like "2168
GLUTTER BABES HOT 4U WITH GENUINE ROLEX". Or something like that.

Haven't tried; didn't need to--and didn't need the mayor's "Don't go out
if you don't have to!" warning. It was a genuine blizzard, along with
what were described as hurricane-force winds (up to 65 mph), which of
course caused massive drifting and swept the snow back onto the streets
(the city has some 6K miles of them) as fast as our 1700 snow plows
could move it to the curbs. Some streets, mainly in the outer boroughs,
still haven't been plowed because there were idiots who decided to go
driving Sunday afternoon and evening (it snowed from 11 a.m. Sunday to 3
or 4 Monday a.m.), got stuck midstream, and abandoned their cars, which
are now semi-buried, and the plows can't get through.

Sidewalks get cleared pretty quickly, since there's a law requiring
buildings and businesses to deal with the immediate area within X hours
after the snow stops falling. Our guy got out there fast with shovel and
IceMelt, so we've got walking space next to huge mounds roughly
following the outlines of the parked cars. We don't exactly need the
reminder that our famed alternate-side parking rules have been
suspended, an advisory that the local media keep mindlessly repeating.

Temps are slated to rise toward the end of the week, and then all the
pretty white stuff will turn to piles of gray slush. Lots and lots of
it. Topped by doggy-do, because people think that if they just leave it
there, it'll melt along with the snow.

They say that the railroads and airports, all totally shut down
yesterday, are gradually getting back to business.

You asked! ;-)

Here in the US, Saturday was a public holiday, Sunday was Sunday, and
Monday was a regular working day.

So YOU're the guy who sends all that stuff!

Jim,

It's not the spam filter. Paul's dealing software, Coryphaeus, has a
feature that can scan the dealer's email inbox looking for pertinent emails.
It then imports the emails and allows the dealer to easily edit and create
the list of definitions as well as track voting and perform other functions.
One of the ways it does that is to look at the subject line of the email for
either the round number or the word. Hence, putting the round number or
word in the subject line makes for a better dealing experience.

Chris

Actually, I usually make the same request as Paul does (woid and/or round
number) and use both of those searches to ensure I get all defs. I have,
once or twice, recovered someone's def from Google's spam folder this way.

I know ... I lived in London for 3 years. And in South Africa the convention
for many years was in between: you didn't get an extra holiday in lieu of
Saturday, but you did get one in lieu of Sunday.

When people in the UK complain that they have the fewest bank holidays of
any country in Europe (8), they are literally correct, but because of the
convention of moving weekend holidays to the following Monday and Tuesday,
they actually do rather better than the Dutch, who nominally have one more.

Against that, nobody in the rest of Europe countenances the outrageous
British dodge of counting public holidays towards the EU minimum of 20 days'
paid leave a year. My employer in London didn't do that, but it was a bank,
and we all know how wicked they are.

Simple,

At the definition deadline, I go searching for missed messages in my spam filters. It cuts the muckraking to a minimum if I can search for given tokens in the title. Otherwise I have to read all that stuff, carefully. I missed one once, because the word was in the title, but had been pasted from the asterisk box in the announcement, L I K E T H I S.

Glutter babes! ROFL.
