<< leader must
<< run through a fixed set of tasks or motions

Interesting definitions! Let's see. I'll use process of elimination.

I doubt the dictionary definition would be plural when a singular could
exist, so I'll exclude 3, 4, 7 thru 11, 13-14, and 17-18. Similarly, I'll
rule out singular definitions which are unlikely to end in S: 2 and 6. From
the remainder, 1 is not specific enough, 5 is unlikely, and 15 doesn't seem
right.

That leaves 12 which I actually believe, and 16 which I don't but wish I'd
have submitted.

8. a railroad term for freight cars left on a siding

On the principle, as Dan remarks, that dictionaries generally have headwords in the singular, I have to fall back on nouns that could be plural construed as singular (as AmE “a savings”) or words that are not nouns. There is a game that I know as fox and geese that is, as it happens, played with marbles. That suggests 1 “a game played with marbles”; it is a very vague definition, but perhaps the citations were so lacking that the lexicographer could not justify identifying it with fox and geese. One game is enough, and so my other vote goes to the only adverb, 12.

That’s 1 and 12.

It's probably No. 3, but you wouldn't dare, or would you? Anyway,

There are several I know it can't be, but that still leaves a few to choose from, and it's probably
none of those either. Let's try 1 and 3.

Best wishes,
