View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2165: New Word GANDERGOSLINGS

John Barrs
December 15th, 2010, 04:37 AM
Folks

I have withdrawn XTAL on 3 grounds

1. We would have had a lot of DQs: too many of you commented that they were
assuming it wasn't an abbrev of Crystal from steam radio days - which it was

2. Google being very helpful supplies sponsored link adverts - in this case
to Ham radio and specifying the word

3. I may need a ruling on this but I am doing it anyway for this round under
'da dealer is god' : 4 submitted defs were nearly identically wrong and
would have had to be merged. In my opinion this would reduce the choices
down too far

So to a New Word:

**********
*
GANDIGOSLINGS:
*
***********

As usual, no indication of capitalisation or otherwise is implied.

New players are welcome. Don't look in a dictionary. If you know the word,
let me know soon, by email (if too many people know it, we'll pick another
word - again!!).

Think up a creative, intriguing, funny or genuine looking definition that
will entice your fellow players to vote for it. Send it BY EMAIL (not as a
public forum message) to me, johnnybarrs (AT) gmail (DOT) com before the
deadline...which is

Midday Thursday on the West coast of the USA
which makes it 8pm for me in the UK
and 9:00 pm Europe

Your submitted defs for XTAL will stand if I do not receive another from
you: but given my reason 3, please do submit a new def

That was probably a good call. As a ham of long standing, I would have DQed on seeing the crystal def.

is "de NOCC" a submitted def (I happen to know what it is - Cahagne

Dodi

as I pressed send I realised that it was a negative crown - and then
realised that the reason is was public was because Chris had posted publicly
- so the two crowns cancelled out

Oh, I didn't think clearly -presumably CC for Chris Carson

I'll explain my cryptic comment - NOCC is an open source webmail browser in
France made available by Nicholas Chalanset and Olivier Cahagne hence NOCC

I can't yet tell you what the 4 defs were as the round has not ended

"steam radio" is a slang term for either 'crystal' radios (which is what I
meant) or the old valve radios which in this country were driven by glass
accumulator batteries which were recharged weekly and steamed while they
were recharging. Of course, very few households had a step-down charger from
our 240v AC mains to the 12v or maybe 6v of the battery (and cars were
mostly started by handle too) Where we were a "little man" used to cycle
(push-bike) round with a carrier holding 12 of these accumulators for
collection and delivery on a weekly basis - we were Tuesday mornings. His
garage had a charger capable of taking 6 accumulators at a time, they took
about 6 hours to recharge

JB has of course replied on this. I thought I had posted my bit about
"steam" as general term for prehistoric technology, esp pre-electric,
but I don't see it so either I was dreaming, or I deleted it, or I
sent it as reply to author by mistake. Oh well, no great loss.

Some interesting stuff can be seen by Googling "steam punk keyboard" or
"von slatt keyboard". I think it's beautiful - but then I use a 70's
IBM keyboard which is not as ancient looking but nothing like the modern
stuff, which flies off the desk if you sneeze.

I’m not sure that “steam radio” refers to the steaming batteries. I think “steam” just means “from the olden days”, as in “steam locomotive”. The crystal radio I built when I was 10 was powered only by the radio waves it picked up, so it did not need an accumulator at all.

Paul,

you are correct - 'steam' just really means 'old-fashioned' but as a child
I was fascinated by the 'steam' emanating from charging accumulators. I too
made a crystal radio at about 10 years old but working with my hands has
never been a strong point with me (except growing plants) - I invariably
managed to make magnetic stirrers go through the beakers and break them even
as a post-grad. It is a gift!

I made a tape deck for my mom when I was a kid, and managed to get the echo
chamber setting in backwards, so that it got louder instead of softer if you
used it!
