Please point me to a thread here on tapcis that explains the reasons why the switch from yahoo to google groups for dixonary. I'm thinking about making a private group. So I'm trying to figure out which server is better for private groups.

Davidh,

Not sure there's a thread per se. We made the move during a time that
Yahoo!'s performance was unacceptably poor (up to 24 hour delay in delivery
of many group messages). We also were able to get the "Dixonary" name for
our Google group, while that name was unavailable on yahoo (taken by a
former player that nobody remembered who wished to still remain the owner).
The group we were playing on was intended for support for an automatic
dealing program. And finally, we were able to get messages delivered
without annoying group identification footers attached.

However, Google Groups is making some changes soon that will reduce it to
nothing more than a mailing list (the pages and files sections are going
away). I understand Yahoo! is also making some changes but am not sure what
they entail.

The bottom line is that reasons for choosing between the groups in the past
are no longer valid. It's the future of the groups that should inform your
choice.
