But Paul, (a) dealer points are normally granted, by custom, only when a
player has been (or might have been) penalized due to some fault of the
dealer--e.g., losing a submitted def; and (b) more important, as Hugo
pointed out in detail, there is a rule governing EXACTLY what happened in
the last round: a combined def including the real one.

Tony just, for some reason, didn't find the applicable rule and therefore
decided to play it by ear. That doesn't mean that the rules should be
changed. Why on earth rewrite them at this point?

Okay, I'm a Dodi-come-lately. I've been playing for only about ten and a
half years.

But c'mon.

Dodi, my point exactly. By custom. Which Tony is supposed to know _all_
about, on his second deal. He can't actually _read_ anywhere what the custom
is. He's just supposed magically to know. And an inexperienced dealer can
never ask for advice while dealing, because all of the available experienced
players are playing.

You say that he shouldn't be able to read it in the rules (by implication,
because it's not there already, and you see no reason to bring the rulebook
up to date).

I say, if he can't read it in the rules, he ought to be able to read it
somewhere.

I'm not proposing to change the rules. They are fine as they are. But they
really do need to be written down.

Newbies often have the best ideas -- a fresh outlook, if you will. <G>

Note that I haven't participated in the "rules" discussion even though I'm usually a "rules" person (I was a math major, you know <G>) . . . because I haven't studied the rules enough to voice an opinion. I guess I shouldn't be proud of that, but . . . it's a heck of a lot easier. LOL!
