I'll participate as much as I can over the next few days. I'm posting
this because possibly one of you might have some ideas. My computer, a
Toshiba Satellite laptop, no longer connects to the Internet. It was
fine early yesterday morning (Friday), but by later in the day, it
refused to connect. I rebooted, but that didn't help.

It connects to our internal wireless network, and my husband has no
trouble getting online, so I have concluded that the problem is with
the computer itself. I stumbled around trying to find something that
might make sense, running whatever the diagnostic was, and getting no
meaningful information. At some point I got a message saying it could
not connect to the DNS (I assume this is the domain name server).

That string of digits (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) doesn't match what my husband
uses, but possibly they are not supposed to be the same. And one of
the little icons in the systray says "a network cable is unplugged" or
something like that. I have to admit I don't know whether it always
says that or whether that indicates something wrong.

The computer has a switch which allows the internet to be turned off
(or I suppose, disconnects from the network). I am in the habit of
leaving it OFF unless I actually want to go online. Is it possible
that the switch is broken somehow, and even though the little light
comes on, it is actually not working?

I am guessing this is a hardware problem of some kind (sigh).

I have left a message for a local computer company, but they don't
work on Saturday, evidently.

If there is a "Geek Squad" service in your locale, I've found them very
effective; and I think they do make house calls on Saturday.

This*happens to me a lot on my laptop.* Usually it disappears in a day or two.*
One thing the Geek Squad will try is:

1.* go to Start.* Choose Run.
2.* enter CMD and press OK
3.** type ipconfig /flushdns
4.* then type ipconfig /renew
reboot the computer.

That SOMETIMES works.*

Thanks to both of you, Toni and Dick.

Dick, I spoke with the Geek Squad "Mission Control" (?) on the phone
and we were not able to resolve anything, but the suggestion was for
my husband (a.k.a. household network administrator) to check the setup
of our network. I may visit the local Geek Squad later. My computer is
nearly 3 years old, and possibly it's time for a new one, but maybe
not.

And Toni, I will try the steps you suggest when I get home. My geek
didn't make this suggestion! This is one of those things that make me
wish I knew more about this stuff, but then you can't know everything!
