View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2132 - Re-corrected INGENA Results

Tony Abell
August 20th, 2010, 07:13 PM
Why is it every time I check the Dixonary account, something else is revealed to
have gone wrong with my deal?

Tim Bourne did indeed post his votes in time. His message was unaccountably
held up for 53 hours between two SMTP servers well before getting to Google
groups. Since it was clearly not his fault, his vote should be counted.

And since a new word has not yet been dealt, it's only fair to reevaluate the
results. At this point Millie Morgan, with an unnatural 6, the next dealer.
Until the next irregularity is discovered, anyway.

I need to correct my interpretation of the mail headers.

Tim Bourne's messages were blocked because of the sending domain not being
recognized. He used to use timbourne43 (AT) virginmedia (DOT) com. Now he's using
dixonary (AT) siam (DOT) co.uk, which isn't recognized as a legitimate sender, so his
messages are going into the moderation queue. The two messages from Tim today
both came at the same time because someone released them from the queue. So...is
it Tim's fault or not? I say we still should count his votes. He probably did
not realize his messages could be indefinitely delayed because of the different
sending address.

Before: Received-SPF: pass (google.com: domain of timbourne43 (AT) virginmedia (DOT) com
designates 74.125.82.171 as permitted sender) client-ip=74.125.82.171;

Now: Received-SPF: softfail (google.com: domain of transitioning
dixonary (AT) siam (DOT) co.uk does not designate 212.67.202.33 as permitted sender)
client-ip=212.67.202.33;

I'm not sure at what level this is being detected, but the explanation is simple. For some reason
virginmedia, which is my ISP and the SMTP server I usually use, seems to be down this week, and I'm
getting constant timeouts from both the pop3 and smtp servers. So I've had to switch to a mail
server I don't usually use, which is on my own domain server. I'm not sure who or what is deciding
what is a "legitimate" server, or how, and I don't know if there's anything I can do about it. I
knew the from address mattered; I had no idea the sending server mattered. When travelling I'm sure
I've used different smtp servers before.

Best wishes,
Tim B.

>The two messages from Tim today both came at the same time because someone
released them from the queue. So...is it Tim's fault or not?

I was the 'moderator' who unblocked Tim's two messages. I regularly (at
least twice a day) check management tasks - usually to delete spam; (I go
the moment I receive notification of stuff in the moderation queue - but
most often another moderator has already done it by the time I get there).

I checked at 15:00 CET yesterday and there was nothing. Last night at about
21:30 CET there were seven messages, two of Tim's and 5 spam. I thought
about it and checked his sending times and decided to release his despite
them being very late. I did this check because I received a message from
Google about moderation timestamped 16:22 EST. I suspect all the other
moderators will also have received that message but because I was first
there I am the 'culprit' who released Tim's postings. That still doesn't
account for the delay in them reaching the moderation queue. The main reason
I allowed them is because of the sending email address - see next comment

You also said:

>He used to use timbourne43 (AT) virginmedia (DOT) com. Now he's using
dixonary (AT) siam (DOT) co.uk, which isn't recognized as a legitimate sender, so his

Actually he has two entries in the members list - and dixonary (AT) siam (DOT) co.uk is
one of them - and posting is allowed for it - so the fact that Google is
blocking him is totally incorrect on their part.

Finally, I also agree that his votes should be counted as the next word was
not yet dealt (sorry Millie)

Yes, Tim has used that address many times (it's been on the last couple
of versions of that address list I circulate every once in a while), and
it has never before held up his messages.

I, too, tried to release Tim's messages. But they were already gone from the
queue when I checked.

But there is something weird with the moderator notification. Usually, I get
an immediate notification when a message lands in the moderation queue. And
I also get an overview of all moderated messages, about once a day. This
time, I did not get the immediate notification; I first learned of Tims
messages when I get the overview message.

I can't speak for the other moderators, but for me this is the reason why it
took so long to release the message. I never proactively check the queue; I
only react on notification messages. (And usually pretty quickly, IF I am
online, as I almost always have my email client open).

Best, Hugo

I am getting repeated errors with file upload and page edits, "We're sorry,
but we are unable to display this page at this time. Please try again in a
few moments." The group seems to be suffering from server problems. I don't
know if that also affects manager notifications too, but it wouldn't
surprise me.
