The word for this round, number 2130, is

****************************
*
* CATAFALQUE
*
****************************

As usual, capitalization is irrelevant.

Please send your fictitious definition directly to mvgrieco (AT) cs (DOT) com.
If you know the word, please send your DQ notification to that same e-
mail address, mvgrieco (AT) cs (DOT) com.

The deadline for submission of fake definitions is
Thursday, August 12, at 9 AM, Eastern Time,
or the equivalent in your time zone.

DQ, I'm afraid, Matthew - and I suspect I won't be the only one. This is something to do with
funerals, particularly state funerals, and is I think the carriage on which a coffin is carried.

In case it goes:
a French medieval headdress

Best wishes,
Tim B.

Nice def Tim but I guess I'll never get to vote for it now.

Tim B and Jim,

Matthew had changed the word--to GANANCIAL--many hours before you posted
your exchange about CATAFALQUE. (The deadline's also an hour later.)

Didn't you get the message?

Not until after I'd posted. Yesterday I switched ISP, and was without any connection for several hours.

Best wishes,
Tim B.

It's possible that Tim sent his message way before Matthew announced the new
word.

When I came online this morning (European time), I got a message about some
messages in the moderation queue. Based on subject and sender, I released
Tim's message and deleted the other (spam) messages. Maybe Tim's message had
been waiting in that queue for a long time already?

Best, Hugo

So the more important question is whether a crown should be awarded, and to
whom. A public def (and DQ) for a word that has been replaced, which could
have been stopped by a moderator ... hmm.

I'll think more after coffee.

Mea culpa, I think. In extenuation, this was actually the first message I was able to send using my
new ISP's SMTP server, after a lot of fiddling with settings and options, and while I thought I'd
changed the To address, obviously I hadn't.

Best wishes,
Tim B.
