View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 6: HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUAA

One of the files in the Tapcis section 17 Files area was an
archived posting from T. about word choices.

In it T. says "There has been some controversy over the latest word ... In short, the
current word is not one I would have chosen."
You can read the whole post on the Coryphæus group in the Files section under
Game Rules and Advice for Players.

But the post doesn't say what "the current word" was. I suspect it was HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUAA.
T., if you're reading your digests, or maybe someone else who was around then:
can you recall if my guess is correct?

I wasn't around for that word, but was for floccipaucinihilipilification.

It's a perfectly acceptable word if you're a Hawaiian. It means, if I
recall correctly, "Little fish, face of a pig", and is applied to a
particular trigger fish. Pua'a is pig, by the way.

It can't have been floccipaucinihilipilification that T. was talking
about in her post, because the post is from July 1989, and
floccipaucinihilipilification could not have been played much earlier
than December 1990.

I don't really care much about the word as such. Once played, a word is
of no further interest in the game.

But I would like to know if I have correctly identified it as the word
T. was deprecating.

Don't the ALLWORDS files identify the Hawaiian triggerfish as the woid for
round 6? What other confirmation do you need?
By the way, isn't it actually the state fish?

Dear me, I must have explained this badly.

I don't want to know what the word in round 6 was, neither do I want to
know what it means. Anyway, as you say, those things are easy to find
out without asking the group.

What I do want to know is, when Theresa Carey posted a message on 19
July 1989 talking about "the current word", was that "current word" the
word in round 6 or was it a later one, and if so which one? Round 6 is
my best guess. But it would take someone who participated in the
"controversy" surrounding it to confirm that.

I'm just back from Mexico, and I don't know if anyone
else answered this (am I the "senior" player at this
point?) but I THINK the answer is yes. It was from a
Hawaiian dictionary, and the discussion was whether
that was a standard American dictionary or not...

Thanks, Toni. Exactly the kind of answer I wanted.
