Sorry for the delay. Here are 21 thoroughly spiffy definitions for
NIFLE, one of which actually came from a dictionary. No, really.
Vote for two (2) definitions in a public message to this list/board,
preferably as a response to this message.
The deadline shall be:
12:00am EDT Sunday 14 August 2005 or
9:00pm PDT Saturday 13 August 2005 or
05:00am BST Sunday 14 August 2005 or
04:00 UCT Sunday 14 August 2005
All errors are my fault, of course. Good luck!
1. _Br. Sl._ An unusual event or spectacle. [fr. _an eyeful_]
2. A thin decorative band, usually of metal, between the mouthpiece of a pipe
and the bowl.
3. The channel cut in the end of a barrel stave to receive the barrelhead.
4. Bread pudding thickly studded with raisins.
5. A blacksmith's apron.
6. To wander about idly or in pursuit of pleasure.
7. A small passageway between the robing room and the chancel of a church.
8. Service slang for a rifle fitted with a night sight, from Night rIFLE.
9. A ring normally used to attach a rope or line, such as on a sail.
10. The burrow of a ferret.
11. _Brit._ _Advertising._ to rapidly recite the statutory text at the end of
radio advertisements for banks, etc. [imit., shortened f. _do the needful_]
12. _Scot._ a very small amount, especially of food.
13. A small, curved whisk used in making sauces.
14. A trivial or worthless thing or person.
15. A distinct section of an arthropod, consisting of two or more adjoining
segments, such as the cephalothorax of a spider.
16. Marked by friendly intimacy. [From Frisian: "noflik"]
17. To cup one hand over the mouth in order to conceal a smirk or sneer.
18. The negative form of "rifle" (NOT or NO + RIFLE) used by peaceniks,
gun-control and anti-war activists, and their ilk. Most used in
confrontation and protestation with the NRA when they chant "Nifle, Nifle,
Nifle!!" and carry "Nifle" signs and wear "Nifle" buttons.
19. Having little elasticity; hence easily cracked or fractured or snapped.
20. To finish or decorate the border or edge of.
21. To stammer. [Obs.]

Tony -
Nice selection. I'll try:
3. The channel cut in the end of a barrel stave to receive the barrelhead.
and
6. To wander about idly or in pursuit of pleasure.
Earlier this week I had a rather bad day -
Don't you hate it when they say "can you feel your toes and fingers?" It
brings up the awful possibility that there might be an answer other than the
usual.
I had a momentary failure of imagination Tuesday night near the end of my
flying trapeze class. I changed something on a new move I'd been working on
for the last several weeks, slipped out of my safety belt, and fell between
15 to 20 feet onto the net. The problem was that in slipping out of the
belt, it gave a lift to my feet as a parting act, and positioned me directly
head down.
I managed to tuck my head in and take most of the weight on my shoulders,
but as the net flexed down it gave my head a nasty push forward, accompanied
by the sound of 6 or 8 rapid chiropractic neck adjustments, almost a ripping
sound. I _hate_ neck adjustments. Haven't had one in years. Then I
bounced up and came down with my forehead on the ridge rope along the edge
of the net. Lost a little skin there, but had the presence of mind to grab
the net and prevent myself from bouncing out. This is always a good idea as
the net is some 8 feet above a concrete floor. Somehow I came to rest on my
back and had to deal with that question I first mentioned. Good News! The
answer was yes. I even got down out of the net by myself. After some
careful self-assessment.
The next day I had a professional evaluation of the damage, which appears to
be all muscle sprains and some bruises, especially around the ribs. I'm a
little stiff at the moment, but overjoyed not to be a big stiff, if you'll
pardon the expression. I've been ordered not to go up on the trapeze again
until I have a clean bill of health. Considering the pain I'm currently in
there's not much danger of my wanting to bounce around in a net again right
away. But I'm very annoyed to be missing both flying and catching classes.
Experiences like this always give me a great appreciation for being alive.
I just try to avoid this sort of inspiration whenever possible. Like the
day I looked up from my convertible and saw the underside of a descending
car, and spent the rest of the day combing bits of broken glass out of my
hair. An interesting experience, but not one you want to repeat too often.

By the shape of it, if OE, _nifle_ ought to be a verb indicating small
repeated motions, as in shoot/shuttle, shove/shuffle, spark/sparkle,
sit(set)/settle, *stip(=dot)/stipple, drop(drip)/dribble. Which would
make it 6 or 11 (assuming the etymology is fanciful) or 21.
_Except_ that all of those -le verbs have short vowels, and anyway
postulated OE nifilian doesn't ring any bells, nor a related unsuffixed
verb (nefan? nifan? nyfan?) either.
So not OE, but a French word like rifle, for which shape is little help.
So I'll abandon etymology and instead choose the 2 most popular, which
strangely enough yields the same answer: 6 and 21.

Guerri, John, Leonard, and Carolyn,
Thanks for your wishes. Although the pain is still fairly intense, the
damage still appears to be all muscle tears and bruising, so I'm about as
lucky as I could ask. I'll let you know when I'm cleared to fly again, and
will certainly be taking it easy for a while.
I do some help with Kathy's gardening from time to time. After almost 9
years of flying it's hard to call it a hobby anymore. Obsession seems like
a more appropriate word. My hobby is probably Argentine Tango, which Kathy
and I do (between lessons and just going out) two or three evenings a week.
Rock climbing is another hobby, with only occasional outings. The flying is
an excuse to keep up a reasonable level of fitness. I find gyms just too
uninspiring, and yoga wasn't intense enough.

Chuck,
Somehow I missed your initial account, I guess because it was appended to
your vote message. What a scary experience. I'll join my best wishes for a
speedy and complete recovery with the others. I imagine this will put a
crimp in your Tango-ing. Did you learn from the revered Fernando?

Chris -
Scary. That covers it quite well. I spent quite a bit of time in the days
after feeling very grateful to be alive. In a way it's too bad that wears
off. It's an excellent feeling.
I'm happy to report my Tango-ing is unimpaired. I'm just back tonight from
an afternoon lesson followed by an excellent evening of Tango. I'm less
than happy though in that I have yet to met his Excellency - although I did
miss him once by hours. In Moscow.
Thanks for your wishes. They are working,
Chuck
