A rather short, but nevertheless fascinating, list. Choose 2 and vote publicly
no later than 7 PM EDT, Wednesday, May 12.

1. the act of walking back and forth in front of a neighbor's home to
precipitate an ostensibly accidental meeting.

2. gossip (chiefly New York City)

3. attacking a forward position with sniper fire. (Am. Civil War)

4. a skateboarding stunt performed on the several steps, or stoop, at
the entrance to a house.

5. the act of leaving leaflets or other paper material on the front
steps of a house.

6. A variant of the telephone game, played by a row of children sitting
on the stoop of a Manhattan row house.

7. crop dusting.

8. an uncontrolled vibration in an oil refining fractionating column,
caused by an incorrectly adjusted pressure relief valve.

9. low altitude stunt flying above city streets or residential areas,
done by barnstormers to attract an audience.

10. [Sl.] inducing lightheadedness by bending over for an extended period
of time.

11. a technique used by beaters at a pheasant shoot.

12. to search for smuggled goods.

13. a practice with women of robbing gentlemen who fall in their company
under peculiar circumstances (Times, Feb 11, 1859)

14. [Sl.] _vb_, _adj_ a prostitute who steals from (buzzes) her clients.

15. a form of ice racing, without the benefit of studded tires.

Hi Mike,

Fascinating indeed - I am convinced that stoop buzzing does in fact mean all
of these things.

Since I only have two votes, I'll try my luck with:

> 2. gossip (chiefly New York City)

> 4. a skateboarding stunt performed on the several steps, or stoop, at
> the entrance to a house.

Best, Hugo

An unlikely phrase, and a flock of highly unlikely defs. I'll go for
what seem to be the least likely of all:

> 3. attacking a forward position with sniper fire. (Am. Civil War)
>

and

> 11. a technique used by beaters at a pheasant shoot.

Only because I can't decide between the others, I'll go for the most obvious
choices, 2 and 9:

> 9. low altitude stunt flying above city streets or residential areas,
> done by barnstormers to attract an audience.
