Here are 21 definitions brought to you at great expense of wit and wisdom by
our esteemed panel of experts. Now your job is to decide which is the
definition that was submitted by a dictionary

Vote for TWO definitions, as a public forum or group message (in reply to
this one), before the deadline..

9:00 am on Saturday, 03 Apr 2010 in the UK 6:30 pm in parts of Oz 4:00 am
East Coast USA 1:00 am West Coast USA

New Players are welcome, even if you didn't submit a definition you may
vote.

JohnnyB (using DIXOBASE)

1. [rare] starvation

2. [obs.] increasing in weight

3. the process of creating ear wax

4. a process of crushing or mashing

5. to make a crackling or popping sound

6. the process of falsification (orig, obs.)

7. the emergency interruption of a recess

8. in bees, the process of producing honey

9. destroying another's reputation; slandering

10. a blemish; a spot or small patch of discoloration

11. process by which alloy is slowly cooled in the air

12. the act or product of smearing heavily with grease

13. the process by which larval bees are fed by drones

14. the act of killing a victim for sacrifice [L. _macto_ to kill.]

15. exposing children to Macintosh computers at a very early age

16. the process of gelatinizing starch by heating in an aqueous suspension

17. in brewing, the process of producing malt from barley or other cereal
grain

18. the wasteful or frivolous use of inappropriate techniques, esp. in
academic and military research

19. the seepage of underground oil into small channels from which its
recovery is difficult or prohibitively expensive

20. in old castles, the pouring of hot substances through apertures in the
upper part of the gate upon assailants; or the apertures themselves

21. a term used to describe a degenerate situation on a computer where
increasing resources are used to do a decreasing amount of work. Usually it
refers to two or more processes accessing a shared resource repeatedly such
that serious system performance degradation occurs because the system is
spending a disproportionate amount of time just accessing the shared
resource. Resource access time may generally be considered as wasted, since
it does not contribute to the advancement of any process.

1 and 2 as being simple opposites, one is more likely to be correct.

That's logic for you.

I'll go with the bees:

<< 8. in bees, the process of producing honey

<< 13. the process by which larval bees are fed by drones

Did you mean Saturday? Seems like an extraordinarily long
deadline--about 56 hours, I think. Unless I counted wrong.

Anyway, totally befuddled by this collection, I'll take a stab at:

> 4. a process of crushing or mashing
>

and

> 16. the process of gelatinizing starch by heating in an aqueous suspension

With an amused smile at 15, I'll cast votes for 14 based on etymology,
and 20 based on results consistent with 14's etymology.

I'll go for 2 and 11.

It's definitely not as much fun to fly any more. I must be getting old
and curmudgeonly.

I vote for the popular 13 and for the curious etymology in 14 (macto has to be 1st p. sg, not inf.: that would be mactare; always assuming that any of it is true).
