None of the defs I got had the tag line -- might that be the problem setting off a spam filter of some sort? Please - send normal email to me for defs if that is, indeed, the problem <g>.

The tag line is generated by the Google Group, so the defs, which would
have been Emailed to you privately, would not have it. The votes would,
though.

Hi Guerri,

If the submitter included the original message (like I do with this
message), and his or her email program does not autimatically strip the tag
line (like mine), then the tag line that Google Groups added to the "new
word" messsage would be included in the reply.

To verify, I sent this mail to the group and to you personally. The copy
sent directly to you should still include the tag line that was added to
your message to the group; the copy sent to the group should include that
tag line AND another tag line added by Google Groups to THIS message.

Best, Hugo

Did not arrive. I spent a bit of time on this :( and present, for everyone's edification, a transcript from "help":

Welcome Dxxx xxxxxxx.

SystemConnected with Eliza:

Eliza: Thank you for choosing AT&T Internet Services my name is Eliza. How may I help you today?

You: ATT/Yahoo mail this month started putting many worthwhile emails into the spam folder - how can I whitelist people?

Eliza: I am sorry for this inconvenience but don't you worry, I'll do my best to help you out.\

Eliza: To further assist you, may i please have your first and last name and the telephone number associated with your Internet Service?

You: thanks - for some reason anything with "gmail" in it is auto-spam <g>

You: Dxxx xxxxxxxx xxx-xxx-xxxx

Eliza: Thank You: for the information

Eliza: Please hold while i pull up your record

Eliza: Thank you for your patience. For verification purposes. Can you tell me the last 4 digits of the social security numner?

You: xxxx - did you know with that info you have a 1 in 70 chance of guessing a full ssn?

Eliza: Thank you for the information. Let me go ahead and check that out for You . Please hold

Eliza: Angela, If You are getting that information it needs uninstall and reinstall the program

Eliza: I apologize for that

You: np

Eliza: Thank you

Eliza: Are you using an AT&T email address>

You: bellsouth.net = att email

Eliza: When you say white listing, do you mean to say allowing spams ?

You: I mean allowing emails from personal friends which are not spam <g>

You: some are very upset with me for not answering them -

Eliza: So you mean to say that you are receiving email messages that's from your friends that goes to the spam folder correct?

You: right - but I did not know a spam folder existed on webmail - I use outlook express <g>

Eliza: For further assistance it needs advance troubleshooting steps with a technical support agent. Let me go ahead and provide you direct number it's 1-888-321-2375 and their hours of operation is 24\7

You: this is not a tech problem - it is software <g> which you ought to have the answer for - really

You: I have only been using puters for 46 years now

Eliza: spam folders definitely exist on webmail Dave but i believe it does not exist on outlook express

You: yes sherlock -- the issus is how to set the Yahoo/ATT spam filter so it does not have egregious false positives <g>

You: one of the "spams" might have tax consequences - this must be reparable

Eliza: You can only set up the spam filter on the AT&T webmail but not on outlook express

You: Yes -- but how do I REMOVE something from the filter which appears to be causing the false positives on stuff like stockbrokerage reports?

Eliza: Let me check it out in my resources as not to provide you false information. Please hold

You: thanks

Eliza: To further assist you with this we need to unlock something on your account to check on the problem. Can you tell me the AT&T email address please?

You: cxxxxxxx@bellsouth.net

Eliza: Thank you for the information. Please hold.

Eliza: Thank you for your patience just to clarify that this is the email address that you are having some issue correct?

You: correct

Eliza: Okay. I am still trying to check this out on my resources. Have you ever tried accessing the email on the AT&T homepage?

You: the att homepage is now at Yahoo - yes

Eliza: AT&T and Yahoo merged last year, but it's still basically the same.

You: I know

Eliza: I am still checking this out for you. Please hold. Thank you

Dave, I read the confusing account of your conversation with your ISP,
and it seems to me that you're not asking the right question.

They all make mistakes. (Rarely defs submitted to me, or other personal
e-mails, have ended up in CompuServe's spam folder. VERY rarely. But I
ALWAYS open and check that folder--dealing or not--to see if there's any
wanted e-mail lurking among the Nigerian scams and Viagra, Percocet, and
auto insurance offers.) You should visit the Webmail site of your ISP
regularly and open the spam folder.

If you aren't checking the spam folder: Why not?

If you are for some reason denied access to the spam folder, as you
suggested in an earlier message, and you've never seen the contents, how
do you know that's what happened to the missing defs?

If that was just a guess on your part, and you ARE denied access to the
spam folder, seems to me your question should be: WHY???

That sounds (or reads) like the typical nonsense generated by ISP
computerized help (certainly for mine over here) where you go round and
round and get nowhere - my 'daddies little helper' is called "Jane" and in
rarely gets her knickers into any sort of twist - she just isn't bright
enough, or maybe I just don't ask the right questions - the beauty of my ISP
computerized system is that "she" becomes "Sarah" at week-ends

Fine - but this is the first time they managed to scarf up real mail. I can access the spam folder on the web - but that does not help with Outlook Express <g>. I do NOT, and never have, relied on the AOL mail system <g>. And the emails theoretically sent to me today did not arrive - even in the spam folder.

My desire is that non-spam not be sent to the spam folder in the first place - and that was never answered in the very long colloquy above<g>.

Did you rename the support person? Or was that just a really, really
interesting coincidence.

Dave -

I counted a vote for my def (#10) from Hugo Kornelis dated 3/24/2010
9:26 AM. I believe your results show this in his summary at the
bottom. In this case I believe I should have received 6 points, as
Hugo's was not added to the other five votes which you noted after my def.

Thanks,

If OE puts real mail in ITS spam folder (my Thunderbird calls it "Junk"
and never puts real mail there), why can't you look THERE?

Well, of course. But does that desire keep you from LOOKING?

And if the lost messages in this case were not, in fact, in any spam
folder (which is the impression left by an earlier message you posted),
and they evidently did not bounce back to the senders, where on earth
DID they go? Could something seriously amiss with Bellsouth's workings
send them totally astray?

Inasmuch as a message stated to have been sent today has still not arrived - even in "spam" - I think more is afoot. And ATT mail did not make this as difficult until it became Yahoo mail <g>.

Meanwhile, for those who wish me to get their emails (noting that this was not a problem the previous time I dealt, implying a change occurred quite recently about handling spam), simply use a normal email client instead of using the googlegroup shorthand <g> which, IIRC, was what I asked people to do when I said to use a specific address for me.

YMMV.

Dave, for what it's worth: when we were playing the game from a Yahoo
group, I and probably others had trouble with it. Unfortunately I cannot
remember the details, but I think it had to do with Yahoo having trouble
delivering mail, and exceeding its threshold of retries. Yahoo would
reset my group settings to stop automatically delivering mail to me.

I mention this even though your situation doesn't exactly match the
problem I had because definitions sent to you would come from the
players' own Email hosts. Yahoo may be doing *something* that is causing
your problem, though. Odd that it has only affected certain players, but
maybe they have something in common.

I wonder if we should experiment by having each person whose definition
was lost send you another message, using the same method as for the lost
messages. Maybe we should all send a message to you, in fact.

When the defs were published and mine wasn't there I resent my message
(because it involved my DQ) - not by forwarding but by copy/paste with
another first line - "The resend to see if it arrived" - and it arrived
fine -- the subject had also changed because the 'reply to' this time was
the publication of the defs (and my usual copy paste of Dave's address make
sure it was private) whereas the original was 'reply to' the initial
announcement of the word - (with the same copy paste of Dave's address make
sure it was private)

The change in filtering occurred after my previous deal - I had no idea wghat had happened. ATT/Yahoo appears to be looking at source and sig - as they do not offer me the chance to alter the filter (other than to have no filtering at all) I ask that people make sure that they are not sending from gmail, and that they add see if the fol;owing is a problem: " domainkeys=neutral (no sig); from=perFact.info; dkim=neutral (no sig)."

Add me to the confused list.

Also add me to the list of, "generally one should not require the sender to
do anything fancy in order to receive an email." It appears, based on this
discussion, that sending my def directly from the gmail web interface
(rather than my client) caused it to get lost.

Unfortunately, when I am traveling for business, I leave my personal
computer (with Outlook) at home, and the web interface or my iPhone are my
only options. And I haven't the slightest idea how to add domainkeys, etc.,
to a gmail message.

In the unfortunate event I'm traveling during Dave's deal again, and his ISP
continues to stink, I'll just expect my 2 DP.

Then Hugo wrote:

And Dodi wrote:

Now, Dave writes:

That doesn't make any sense to me, either. But please, DON'T try to explain.

Not sure if I understand this correctly - but if this implies that you can't
receive mail from the perFact.info domain, than your next def(s) will be
without me. That's my domain.

Best, Hugo

Seems that for the 36 hours it takes to accept definitions on a deal,
temporarily turning off the filter is a more reasonable option than asking
every player to do strange email configuration.

Dan

I'll chip in here with the following observation: with the exception of one
of my email addresses; I have never ever yet sent an email from any direct
mail interface.

I always, always use Outlook. I have it set up to read from my ISP (ntlworld
= 2 email addresses) from gmail (2 email addresses), from yahoo (1 address)
and from my own domain (5 addresses - via google apps - so in reality
another set of gmail) - I use Outlook to sort out the incoming mail into
email folders: the sort initially based on the email address to which it is
sent and secondly some groupings - like dixon, church etc

The point being that I was one of the "lost" definitions, yet when I resent
it it did get to Dave. The only difference between failure and success was
that failure was a 'reply' to the new word message, and success was a reply
to the defs up message : By 'reply' I mean that I 'copy' the email
address from the message, hit 'reply' and 'paste' the email address in the
To: (when I forget to do the copy/paste is the source of all my embarrassing
crowns etc)

JohnnyB
As an aside () when you were trying to et rid of the tag line etc I noted
that even though you replaced the + with an 'at' that what I received was
the + --- maybe that is a Google decision

-- incidentally I only send and receive plain text... I can see the blue
links which makes it very easy to spot when someone has - for instance -
used every image etc that they all come from the IRS but the 'click here' is
to a .ru address

Actually I tried a few custom footers. The correctly spelled one still
resulted in duplicates. The one with the double-hyphen-plus-space
ended up with numerous copies of such hyphens. It's back to "no
footer" which results in the auto-added one (still). I'm hoping they
realize their error soon.

Several defs were lost--a total of five, coming from Hugo, Johnny, Dan,
Matthew, and Toni. They didn't all come from gmail, or from webmail
sites. IIRC, they had nothing in particular in common. That suggests
that the problem is at your end--with your ISP, or your mail service, or
your e-mail client. Whatever.

All but one (the Kornelis one which did not make it to the spam folder, and which I can not say much about since I have never seen the original) either were via a gmail client or with a "no sig" notation on them.

This has not occurred in the past, and there was no reason for me to suspect that anything specific changed. We do knopw the tag line was changed at about the same time.

Only two of the five were from gmail. What is a "no sig notation"?
