View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2086, BATULE: Pick & choose

The definitions are in, 20 of them, and I'm glad I don't have to
figure out which is the real one, since so many seem to have been
copied right from an authoritative dictionary. But choose you
must--and, as usual, you have not just one but two chances to
pick the right one. Vote by public reply to this message.

Should you suddenly recognize the true def and realize that you
know what BATULE really means: Do NOT reply publicly; instead,
e-mail me privately to recuse yourself.

Deadline for voting: Monday, 8 March, at 8 a.m. EST; a bit
earlier to the west; 2 p.m. in England; 3 p.m. for Paul and Hugo;
and midnight in Melbourne.

Here, now, the defs:

1. the share of a joint expense for food or entertainment;
(pl.) accounts of sums due for board and lodging in Oxford
colleges. [med L. _batelli_, of unkn. origin]

2. an overland canal, usually composed of packed earth but
sometimes of stone, used to drag canoes or barges between closely
situated bodies of water.

3. a projecting rectangular block or bracket situated above
the triglyph and beneath the corona of a Doric cornice.

4. a hidden nook among the crenels and merlons of a castle's
battlement in which an archer could hide.

5. [Music] an embellishment consisting of a rapid run of
several notes sung to one syllable.

6. a temporary bridge placed across part of a dock or marina
for pedestrian use.

7. a printer's tool for burnishing portions of a plate prior
to inking.

8. a turret or elevated rampart on a wall for mounting a cannon.

9. a container for liquids made from a section of bamboo.

10. a long loaf of French bread, thicker than a batard.

11. rock detritus or debris at the base of a slope.

12. [Bot.] a leaf in the fanciful shape of a boat.

13. [Archit.] a roof shaped like an upturned boat.

14. the lowest level of fortification in a castle.

15. an oversized wallet for legal papers.

16. a gummy product for fixing the hair.

17. impertinent, disrespectful speech.

18. _Fr._ a shuttlecock.

19. an outbuilding.

20. a springboard.

Phew! What a choice and all of them seem very reasonable. For reasons
entirely of my own I shall go for the shortest and longest - that's #1 and
#20 please

I will try the ones and guess at numbers 1 and 11, although several others
also seem authentic to me..

1. the share of a joint expense for food or entertainment;
(pl.) accounts of sums due for board and lodging in Oxford
colleges. [med L. _batelli_, of unkn. origin]

11. rock detritus or debris at the base of a slope.

13 and 20 for no especial logical reasoning.

I could believe any of them, but I'll pick 12 and 20 as unlikely candidates.

I'll try 11 and 12

Dodi -

An interesting collection, from which I'll select -

11. rock detritus or debris at the base of a slope.

and

18. _Fr._ a shuttlecock.

Thanks,

Chuck

I don't think all that many of these defs really are believeable.
Believeable as defs, yes: much of the diction is convincing, as Dodi
remarks. But mostly, plausible diction or not, unconvincing for the word at
hand. I especially reject the French boats and fortifications.

That leaves me with 7 and 11.

I'm going to go with the least likely: 15 and 16:
