Here are 20 wonderful definitions of polynia, all but one of which, alas,
is a fake. See if you can find the correct definition by voting for your
two favorites no later than 7 PM EST, Tuesday, February 2.
1. a life form that cannot be classified as animal or vegetable.
2. [Med.] arthritis or rheumatism affecting the digits.
3. a pseudo-cereal or grain-like crop of the family Amaranthaceae, grown
primarily for its edible seeds.
4. [Rus.] bulgar wheat.
5. a complex of ribosomes strung along a single strand of messenger RNA
that translates the genetic information coded in the messenger RNA
during protein synthesis.
6. the presence in a single population of more than one genetically
distinct type, each at a frequency too high to be explained by
repeated mutation alone.
7. having uncomfortably many in-laws.
8. a laser printer that begins to approach continuous tone quality by
varying the dot size.
9. [Obs.] profound despondency; hopelessness.
10. a state of having several obsessions.
11. a bloodstream infection by multiple bacteria strains caused by lack
of proper sanitation in hospitals.
12. [Med.] infestation by intestinal worms.
13. a disease of the leg.
14. an amebic dysentery.
15. fleshy spike of flowers.
16. a slash, as in a leaf or petal.
17. the coastal region of the W central part of ancient Greece: now part
of Aetolia and Acarnania in modern Greece.
18. an area of open water surrounded by sea ice.

Edward Thurston.
20. a collection of young hawks. [false pl. from _poly_ + _nias_ a young
hawk]

Too many similar definitions. <sigh>
I'll go with these:
<< 3. a pseudo-cereal or grain-like crop of the family
<< Amaranthaceae,
<< grown
<< primarily for its edible seeds.
<< 4. [Rus.] bulgar wheat.

There are a whole bunch that can't possibly be the real one.
Unfortunately, that still leaves a fistful that look about equally possible.
I'll take a chance on:
4. [Rus.] bulgar wheat.
and
17. the coastal region of the W central part of ancient Greece: now
part of Aetolia and Acarnania in modern Greece.

Hi Mike,
Yet another wonderful and diverse collection.
Definition #7 made me laugh out loud, but will not (sorry!) get my votes.
Those, I cast for:
> 9. [Obs.] profound despondency; hopelessness.
> 11. a bloodstream infection by multiple bacteria strains caused by
> lack
> of proper sanitation in hospitals.
Best, Hugo

I'll take 1 because there should be a word for that, and 7 based on 20's
etymology.

The profusion of supposedly medical defs has left me confused and
despondent so I'll take 9 and 10.

I did not get the posting of the word, either, only Dodi's forwarded
message, too late.
Something's very wrong here.
Anyway, I vote for: 5 for complexity and 7 because there should be a
word!

Something evidently was, but Dan posted a message saying he believes it has now been fixed. Did you see that message?

Actually, I posted a message saying I know what the problem is and how to
fix it, but I need Judy Russell to actually change the code on the
tapcis.com site. Hopefully it won't be too long.
