View Full Version : [Dixonary] New word messages going adrift

Once again Mike's new word message didn't make it to the Google group,
although it appears correctly at tapcis.com. I think it's something
to do with the fact that Mike posts the rolling scores and the new
word in quick succession at tapcis.com, because Dave and Dodi's
replies to the new word post were threaded to the rolling scores
message in the Google group. Most peculiar!

IIRC, this happened at least once before with a new-word announcement from Mike.

I received it via the Google group, time-stamped at 31/01/10 10:37.

Since I'm currently in New Zealand, that time may be misleading.

Best wishes,

Tim Bourne.

PS As I am away from home at present, this comes from a temporary
address. Please address any replies to the address you usually use for me.

That was the time on the copy Toni forwarded to me.

But not at the tapcis.com Website. They were totally separate. And how come Chris and Toni got it directly while others didn't?

I have to say that I think Mike's message did make it to the Google group,
because the Google group forwarded it to me. That said, the Google group
itself doesn't show it, and shows replies to it as if they were replies to
the rolling scores.

I think I know why, too: tapcis.com put the same message-id tag on both
messages:

Message-ID: < mshefler.45mgt1 (AT) no-mx (DOT) www.tapcis.com/forums >

I have to say that in this case it looks as though Google isn't the one at
fault. A mail system that believes that two messages should not have the
same message-id is only going to show you the first of the two messages.

That isn't being picky, it's a reasonable precaution against spam.

The Google Groups website clearly does this, and I think other systems may
be doing the same.

Thanks for noticing this, Paul. This actually explains all the odd symptoms
nicely. Do you play Dr. Gregory House in another life? :D

As you say, some email programs (including the Google Groups archive)
interpret identical message IDs as duplicate copies of the same message, and
display only one. Other programs display both messages.

The flaw appears to be in the mail gateway interface that echoes tapcis.com
messages to the list. It should not be generating duplicate IDs. I'll work
with the tapcis.com sysops to try to fix this. In the meantime, the
workaround is to avoid posting more than one message per hour directly to
the tapcis.com site, which should really only affect our illustrious
scorekeeper (sorry, Mike).

I can't guarantee I can wait an hour between messages, but in the future,
I'll try post the new word first if I deal, then that should be the one that
gets through to everyone.

I've located/confirmed the bug and the fix. Hopefully Judy can get it
tweaked before your next round of posts.

I also received the new word message via the Google group. So another
oddity might be why some of us got it from the group, and some didn't. I
also got the rolling scores message.
