Here are 18 definitions for COWAL--there's no #1 because of a
silly mistake on my part that I won't take time to correct because
I'm already behind schedule.

Please cast your votes for your two favorites by the deadline of:
2100 hours, or 9:00 pm, Eastern time, tomorrow evening, Monday,
January 25. I think that's about 35 hours from now.

I don't envy you the job of choosing from among these!

2. Having fear.

3. A reverse bevel, as on a gear.

4. Any fleshy growth on the body.

5. _Scot._ A larder or store cupboard.

6. Beauty that is more than skin deep.

7. Chewed, eaten [OE, fm _ceówan_ chew].

8. A fine-grained canvas used for painting.

9. The ceding of forested land by a debtor.

10. A musical composition to be performed on bells.

11. An opening in the transept wall for viewing the altar.

12. A kind of depression or channel, similar to a billabong.

13. A fast-rushing current; esp. after a heavy storm, a freshet.

14. A form of Sufi devotional music popular on the Indian
subcontinent.

15. A ring-shaped spacer used in the installation of limestone
facings.

16. A diseased or maimed sheep staked away from the flock to draw
off wolves or other predators.

17. Timber tree of central and southeastern United States having
hairy branchlets and a swollen trunk base.

18. [local] A knacker--one who buys old cattle and horses to
slaughter for their hooves and hides [ME _cull_, to kill].

19. Light-weight relocatable fencing, esp. for temporary stalls
at cattle yards; originally referred to pens made from
recycled aluminum siding, now applied to any kind of light
metal structure.

Enjoy!

As usual, no clue:

<< 3. A reverse bevel, as on a gear.

<< 15. A ring-shaped spacer used in the installation of limestone
<< facings.

None of these seem to make much sense--which means, of course, that they're all excellent candidates. At total random, votes to:

> 5. _Scot._ A larder or store cupboard.

and

> 11. An opening in the transept wall for viewing the altar.

Totally baffled, but I'll take wild guesses on number 3 and 8.

What an impossible choice! With little hope, I'll vote for:

3 and 11 please.

I really wanted to vote for #1 but I'll settle for its evil twins at
11 and um 13

Well, the correct answer is obviously "bovine", but I don't see it ...

I vote for 15 because it might be true, and 2 because it is awful enough to
be one of Murray's lapses.

3 and 5 look likely enough.

Well, it's a mystery to me, but I'll go with the livestock: 16 and 18,
thanks Scott

I would have voted for 6 and 16, I think, had I made it before the deadline:
