View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2065: QUALLY [Defintions]

Paul Keating
December 16th, 2009, 03:25 PM
Our inventive players have concocted all but one of the 19 definitions
for QUALLY presented below for your edification and entertainment. The
remaining definition is, believe it or not, real.

This has been a confusing round, with two players submitting defs for
cunjevoi that they subsequently countermanded, and another player
submitting a def in public and having to fix it up in private, and yet
another player submitting two defs. On top of which, my primary spam
filter (acm.org) announced itself unavailable 20 minutes before the
deadline when I went to check. To any player who feels slighted by
these circumstances and how I dealt with them, my apologies, and the
assurance that I was trying hard to get things right. (But I did fail
Psychic 101.)

In spite of that we have a bumper crop of 19 defs, several of which
look better to me than the right answer, and I look forward to the
vote.

Please vote for the two you think the best, for some value (or values)
of "good" that seems appropriate to you (such as plausible,
politically correct, embarrassing, witty, implausible, long, or as
chosen by a random number
generator). You can do this whether or not you have not submitted a
definition, and whether or not you have played before. You're not
allowed to vote if you know the right answer.

1. 1. harsh, shrill, braying, esp. of brass instruments. 2.
_rare_shrewish, overbearing.

2. _Naut._ a soft covering for cables or rigging to reduce sail chafe

3. a high ranking, as in a competition; to achieve such ranking

4. a beam supporting boards of a floor or laths of a ceiling

5. in India, a covered litter, carried by four men

6. of wine: cloudy, full of suspended matter

7. a raincoat or macintosh [Aus. sl.]

8. a kind of ghost or spirit

9. a large glass marble

10. a large knife

11. a small sinkhole

12. a ne'er-do-well; wastrel

15. _N.Z._ a small ravine cut by a streaming flood

16. a great clan, tribe, or inclusive group of kindred

18. a tinnitus effect consisting of intermittent, high-pitched tones

19. a strip of carpet used backstage to silence actors' footsteps
during a performance

May as well get this over with:

<< 2. _Naut._ a soft covering for cables or rigging to reduce sail
<< chafe

<< 5. in India, a covered litter, carried by four men

Nice presentation pattern!

Haven't the slightest notion which may be real, but I rather like
the combination of

#9. a large glass marble

and

#11. a small sinkhole

I'll try 11 and 13.

I may be offline for a few days as my son Chris is getting married on
Saturday and it seems there are certain things a father needs to do at
times like this. Dealing the next round is not one of them.
Fortunately it seems most unlikely that I will be called on to do so,
but you have been warned.
