View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2059: quoss - Definition List

There are a total of 18 definitions for QUOSS. Here is another one of those 'flexible' deadline cases. 36 hours would place the deadline inconveniently late tomorrow night/Wednesday morning in the Eastern time zone so the dealer will exercise his perogative and slip it a bit. Please vote for your two favorites, by public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 8:00 AM EST on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, or 5:00 AM PST .
1. A bonus stroke in croquet awarded for unfair play by an
opponent.
2. A particular kind of bit used in carriage racing.
3. A wild horse _Equus mongolensis_ of Central Asian
steppes.
4. _Nautical_ Small stuff made from rope yarns twisted
together.
5. A beverage of South Asia made by fermenting and
distilling the juice of the mangosteen (genus Garcinia).
6. The pulp left after pressing apples to make cider.
7. To grumble, complain.
8. A chemical substance that produces fire through
friction.
9. The cone of fibers that builds up on a spindle during
spinning.
10. A wild ass of Asia, now believed extinct.
11. An uncontrollable impulse.
12. An amphibious opossum of South America.
13. In printing, the allowed variance over or under the
ordered quantity, traditionally 5 percent or one quire
per ream.
14. To barter, exchange.
15. Lambswool that has been washed and combed but not yet
spun.
16. A Russian beverage (see _kvass_).
17. A unique lichen found above the timberline in the White
Mountains of New Hampshire.
18. A yellowish anthelmintic effective against the human
tapeworm, obtained from cusso, the female flowers of
the Abyssinian tree _Hagenia abbyssinica_.

I'm getting tired of zeroes ... <sigh>.
Okay, let's see. I've narrowed it down to seven. LOL! But I will vote for the beverages:
<< 5. A beverage of South Asia made by fermenting and
<< distilling the juice of the mangosteen (genus Garcinia).
<< 16. A Russian beverage (see _kvass_).

A goodly offering. Actually, I rather fancy mine, but I'm not
voting for it. I'll take a chance on:

> together.
and
> 6. The pulp left after pressing apples to make cider.

The rope stuff of 4 is popular so either it's da woid or we have a
clear winner; and either way I don't have to worry about dealing.
Apart from that I have no idea, so .I'm going for the matched pair of
not quite combinable wild Asian hoofs - 3 and 10
