What an ingenious and varied group of definitions -- from archaeology to
Zoroastrianism, from ultra short to very lengthy -- and among the 20 listed,
19 fakes and 1 taken from an authoritative dictionary.

Vote for TWO definitions, as a public forum message (in reply to this one),
before the deadline...

New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a definition this round.
Don't look in a dictionary.

1: a ganglion

2: a timekeeper

3: a surgical clamp

4: an acolyte of Zoroastrianism

5: a professional jester or minstrel

6: _obs._ a joiner or cabinetmaker

7: a tropical dodder of Central America

8: someone in the grip of inner conflict

9: a surgical instrument for scraping bones

10: [Gk.] a runner used to carry messages in battle

11: a plaited doughnut deep-fried and soaked in syrup

12: an old woman, especially one who is considered ugly

13: a confidence artist whose specialty is switching packages

14: one who is out-of-touch with reality or unwilling to accept reality

15: any of several varieties of South American sunflower, esp. those of the
subfamily Mutisioideae

16: one who frequents churches for a living; as, a beggar or seller of
candles [Gk. _xustos_ portico]

17: a slender archaeological trowel, having a leaf-shaped blade at one end
and a rectangular blade at the other

18: Xystus: a musical instrument used in the worship of Isis; played like a
violin by scraping the strings [Grk _zustros_ scraper]

19: a prearranged code term consistently substituted for a particular
word or phrase in an otherwise plain-language confidential communication

20: an ancient device which measured time by marking the regulated flow of
water through a small opening, less accurately than the later clepsydra

Good luck, Dick

I assume you're planning to tell us what that deadline IS.

Meanwhile, I'll choose the following from this fascinating
selection (I really did read all twenty):

> 6: _obs._ a joiner or cabinetmaker

and

> 7: a tropical dodder of Central America

I'm throwing guesses at the old woman and the boring but believable sunflower:

I don't know what it is and I don't know what a dodder is either,
ergo... And a special trowel needs its own name, so... put me down for
7 and 17.
