Hopefully I haven't screwed up the scores. I guess I'm going to have to take a GMail configuration class. After setting my phone up to get email from my various accounts, GMail is the only one that, after getting messages on the phone, declines to download them to Windows Mail. Grrrr. As a result I had to use Cory's "Insert" function and enter the votes manually. Back to the GMail drawing board.

Anyway, the winner of round 2055 is Mike Shefler, whose definition
"A fool or stooge. (<a minor character in several works of
Oscar Wilde, serving as a victim of ridicule or pranks.)"
earned a natural 7 .

Dodi Schultz takes coveted second place with 6 points.
Guerri Stevens is runner-up with 4 points.

The true definition was 15: "An idler." (OED 2nd), which 2
perceptive players guessed.

1. The shudder caused by taking very bitter medicine [fr.
quinine or cuscus bark].
Vote from: Shefler
Submitted by: Barrs, who scores natural 1.

2. (Sl) A female counterintelligence agent.
No votes
Submitted by: Morgan.

3. A fool or stooge. (<a minor character in several works
of Oscar Wilde, serving as a victim of ridicule or
pranks.)
Votes from: Abell, Barrs, Bourne, Cunningham,
Heimerson, Keating and Morgan
Submitted by: Shefler, who scores natural 7.

4. The person or team having the lowest score in ninepins.

Votes from: Lodge and Savage
Submitted by: Stevens, who scores 2 + 2, total 4.

5. Supporting structure for a polyp colony.
Vote from: Hart
Submitted by: Madnick, who scores natural 1.

6. A clamp used on the fret board of a stringed instrument
to raise the key.
No votes
Submitted by: Weltz.

7. The female genitals.
Vote from: Savage
Submitted by: Abell, who scores natural 1.

8. An auxiliary gel light used in cinematography to temper
too-deep shadows. [Origin obscure]
Votes from: Barrs, Keating, Kornelis, Lodge, Madnick
and Weltz
Submitted by: Schultz, who scores natural 6.

9. A fishhook having an even bend.
Votes from: Hart and Schultz
Submitted by: Kornelis, who scores natural 2.

10. A pillow bolster.
Votes from: Bourne and Shepherdson
Submitted by: Widdis, who scores natural 2.

11. A broad-brimmed hat with a plume, worn by men in the
17th Century.
Votes from: Abell, Cunningham and Kornelis
Submitted by: Lodge, who scores natural 3.

12. A card game much like Old Maid in which the Ace of
Clubs is the card to be avoided.
No votes
Submitted by: Crom.

13. An unimportant hamlet or settlement; _spec._ one
without a church.
Votes from: Schultz, Weltz and Widdis
Submitted by: Keating, who scores natural 3.

14. An Australian food fish; a morwong.
Votes from: Madnick and Widdis
Submitted by: Hart, who scores natural 2.

15. An idler.
Votes from: Heimerson and Stevens
Real definition from OED 2nd

16. A by-line (Brit. usage in 1870s Latin-English amalgam
_who by_).
Votes from: Morgan and Shefler
Submitted by: Cunningham, who scores natural 2.

17. Someone travelling under an assumed name.
Vote from: Stevens
Submitted by: Bourne, who scores natural 1.

18. Variable; inconstant
Vote from: Shepherdson
Submitted by: Heimerson, who scores 1 + 2, total 3.

Whew! So those incantations--"Vote for Number Three! Vote for
Number Three!"--as the last few votes were coming in--worked!

Chris - A simple workaround might be to get gmail to automatically
forward mail to one of your other mail accounts that does work with
your phone.

I used to have the opposite problem, and now my other mail accounts
are on auto-forward to gmail. I often access my mail from other
computers so having it all consolidated with gmail is convenient.

Disclaimer: I still think of my phone as a talking device so my
"advice" has a 20th-century bias and is probably totally irrelevant to
your problem.

Jim,

I seem to have found a workaround by changing the email delivery from the
Google Dixonary Group to my MSN account rather than the GMail account. The
MSN account works as expected. I'm guessing that GMail has some unusual
defaults that need to be tweaked for it to behave like a "normal" POP3 mail
account. This is my first venture into the world of smart phones so it's
taking a little getting used to. I would hate to have to deal from the
phone unless Paul comes up with a Cory mobile application but it's pretty
handy otherwise.
