I'm pleased to report that I had time to do a complete uninstall and
reinstall of Coryphæus on my Windows 7 (x64) machine mid-round, and it
performed flawlessly using the gmail IMAP interface. But 'flawlessly' might
be a questionable adverb to apply to my dealing this round.
It was minutes after I'd posted the definitions and went to verify that
they'd made it to the mailing list that I noticed something horrible. The
real definition (#10) had a typo! How could I do such a thing? How was I
to recover gracefully? How did it happen in the first place? A quick
visit to the site where I'd originally retrieved the definition lessened my
worries. The typo wasn't mine. I had simply cut-and-pasted. I'm not sure I
would have chosen that word had I seen the typo earlier. I looked around at
several other online sources and the typo was repeated!
Most online dictionaries that cite Webster's 1913 dictionary have drawn
those entries from the Project Gutenberg text
(http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/670 for the X, Y, Z volume) where, as
expected, I found the precise (incorrect) wording that I posted, and which
is not-so-coincidentally found on numerous online dictionaries. I asked
Dodi (after she voted) to do some additional investigation. She did not
find zoutch in any of her dead-tree editions, but uncovered a different
online variant (Century) indicating the word 'or' likely should have read
'of'. The error might have been OCR-induced, or a transcription error since
'f' and 'r' are keyboard neighbors.
In any case, it's conceivable that the typo dissuaded players from voting
for the real definition. By hook (fish pun intended) or by crook (trickery,
even accidental), I managed to escape with a D0, marred only by John Barrs'
not-unexpected DQ.
Tim Lodge is elected as the next dealer with 5 votes for his thicket. Chris
Carson and Chuck Emery share the real winner spot with their combined def
