The word for this round is

*************
* *
* BENTHOS *
* *
*************

As usual, no indication of capitalization or otherwise is implied.

New players are welcome. Don't look in a dictionary. If you know the word,
let me know soon, by email (if too many people know it, we'll pick another
word).

Think up a creative, intriguing, funny or genuine looking definition that
will entice your fellow players to vote for it. Send it BY EMAIL (not as a
public forum message) to me, before the deadline...

Full rules, if you're curious, are in the file RULES.DIX in library 17.

Unless too many DQs arrive, the deadline will be Friday, October 23, at
7:00 PM EDT -- or whatever that is equivalent to in your time zone.

A medicinal smell on the breath caused by ketone secretion from abnormal
metabolism of oral bacteria .

The weird thing is that I DEFINITELY posted Dick's AOL address in the address
bar. Somehow The Bat! (email client) switched the group address when I wasn't
looking. I don't feel I deserve this crown!

Was just about to get one out of the closet for you when I
spotted the above second message. Okay, no crown. You might
consider abandoning the Bat, though, for sending messages; it
obviously isn't to be trusted with important communications.
Harry's Owl has proved reliable over the years. My Thunderbird
performs dependably, as well.

Looks like The Bat! is a bit batty.

I figured it out. The Bat! acts like Outlook and other clients when you enter
part or all of an address, and offers you various matches which you can choose
from.

Dick's address in the googlegroups list mailings has only his AOL address in the
field where one's name and email address are supposed to be. The name part is
missing. When I pasted in the AOL address (sans name), The Bat! matched it up
with previous addresses and offered me TWO choices, the first one being the
googlegroups.com address prefaced with the aol.com address in lieu of a name,
which I must have clicked without looking carefully because I normally get
offered only ONE address when I paste in the actual email address.

I think the absence of a name in Dick's mailings may have its origins in the
primitive email user interface in the old AOL stand-alone client (as opposed to
the web interface), but I'm not sure.
